What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in remote virology roles?

Professionals in remote virology roles often face challenges such as limited access to laboratory facilities and hands-on sample analysis, which can impact the speed of experimental work. Effective communication and collaboration with lab-based teams are crucial, as much of the data analysis and research coordination happens virtually. Adapting to digital lab management systems and maintaining up-to-date knowledge on evolving virological techniques are also key aspects. Despite these challenges, remote virology roles offer flexibility and the opportunity to focus on data interpretation, literature review, and collaborative research projects.

What is a remote virologist?

A remote virologist is a scientist who studies viruses and related diseases while working outside of traditional laboratory or office settings, often from home or another remote location. They may conduct research, analyze data, write reports, and collaborate with other scientists virtually. Advances in technology have enabled many virologists to perform tasks such as bioinformatics analysis, literature reviews, and grant writing remotely. However, some laboratory work may still require on-site presence, depending on the nature of the research. Remote virologists often use specialized software and digital communication tools to stay connected with their teams.

What is the difference between Remote Virology vs Remote Microbiology?

AspectRemote VirologyRemote Microbiology
Required CredentialsVirology degrees, PhD or equivalent, specialized certificationsMicrobiology degrees, PhD or equivalent, lab certifications

Common Search/ComparisonRemote Virology vs Remote Microbiology

Remote Virology and Remote Microbiology share similar educational backgrounds and work environments, often within healthcare and research sectors. However, Virology focuses specifically on viruses, while Microbiology covers a broader range of microorganisms. Both roles involve remote research, analysis, and reporting, but their specialized knowledge areas differ, making them distinct career paths within the biological sciences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Virologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Virologist, you need a strong background in molecular biology, microbiology, or virology—typically supported by an advanced degree (MSc or PhD) and research experience. Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), data analysis software, and bioinformatics tools is often required. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective written communication skills help you interpret data and collaborate remotely with research teams. These skills ensure accurate experimental results, effective research contributions, and seamless teamwork in a remote scientific environment.

Job description

The Role:

Moderna is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented, and adaptable candidate to join the Infectious Disease Research (IDR) Virology team. This role will support the development of mRNA-based vaccines and therapeutics across preclinical and clinical programs through the execution of virology and cell-based assays.

The successful candidate will contribute to generating high-quality, decision-enabling data to support key program milestones, working in a fast-paced and collaborative environment. This position requires strong experimental rigor, the ability to manage multiple priorities, and a commitment to delivering data with speed, integrity, and reproducibility.

This position will work closely with scientists across research, translational, and clinical teams, as well as interface with internal and external collaborators, to advance multiple parallel programs.

Here's What You'll Do:

  • Culture and maintain diverse mammalian cell lines and primary cells to support virology assays

  • Execute virological assays, including virus neutralization, infectivity assays, and virus propagation, with high precision and reproducibility

  • Perform assay quality control and ensure data integrity to support program decision-making

  • Analyze, summarize, interpret, and clearly communicate experimental results to cross-functional teams

  • Maintain accurate, well-organized electronic laboratory notebooks in accordance with internal standards

  • Support reagent preparation, sample tracking, and inventory management to ensure efficient lab operations

  • Contribute to assay development, optimization, and scaling

  • Collaborate across teams to deliver high-quality data across multiple concurrent programs under aggressive timelines

Here's What You'll Need (Basic Qualifications)

  • B.S. in biology, or a related discipline with 0-2 years of relevant academic or industry experience

  • Hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture and sterile technique is required

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data quality, integrity, and reproducibility

  • Ability to manage multiple experiments and priorities in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong organizational, record-keeping, and data management skills

  • Effective communication skills and a collaborative, team-oriented mindset

  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and adapt to evolving scientific and program needs

  • This position is site-based, requiring you to be at Moderna's site full-time. This position is not eligible for remote work

  • At Moderna, we are focused on delivering on our mission by enabling talent to thrive. For this role, we are currently unable to offer immigration sponsorship. Candidates must already hold work authorization in US and be able to maintain that status without the need for future sponsorship.

Here's What You'll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Experience with virology techniques such as virus propagation, TCID50, plaque assays, viral infectivity, and/or neutralization assays

  • Familiarity with molecular and cellular biology techniques (e.g., PCR/qPCR, ELISA, flow cytometry, western blotting, molecular cloning)

  • Experience working in a high-throughput or matrixed research environment

  • Exposure to assay development or optimization for mechanistic or quantitative readouts

Pay & Benefits

At Moderna, we believe that when you feel your best, you can do your best work. That's why our US benefits and global well-being resources are designed to support you-at work, at home, and everywhere in between.

  • Best-in-class healthcare coverage, plus voluntary benefit programs to support your unique needs

  • A holistic approach to well-being, with access to fitness, mindfulness, and mental health support

  • Family planning benefits, including fertility, adoption, and surrogacy support

  • Generous paid time off, including vacation, volunteer days, sabbatical, global recharge days, and a discretionary year-end shutdown

  • Savings and investment opportunities to help you plan for the future

  • Location-specific perks and extras

The salary range for this role is $63,200.00 - $100,900.00. This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An individual's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, performance, and business or organizational needs. The successful candidate may be eligible for an annual discretionary bonus, other incentive compensation, or equity award, subject to company plan eligibility criteria and individual performance.
