Entry Level Virology information

What are entry level virology jobs?

Entry level virology jobs are positions for individuals who are beginning their careers in the study of viruses. These jobs typically involve assisting with laboratory experiments, collecting and analyzing samples, and supporting senior researchers in studying virus structure, function, and behavior. Common roles include laboratory technician, research assistant, or junior scientist in academic, government, or pharmaceutical settings. Entry level positions often require at least a bachelor's degree in biology, microbiology, or a related field, and provide valuable experience for advancing in the field of virology.

What are some typical daily tasks for an entry-level virologist working in a laboratory setting?

As an entry-level virologist, your daily tasks often include preparing and maintaining cell cultures, assisting with experiments involving virus propagation, and performing basic molecular biology techniques such as PCR and gel electrophoresis. You may also be responsible for recording data, maintaining laboratory equipment, and following strict safety protocols. Collaboration with senior scientists and team members is common, as you'll help interpret experimental results and contribute to ongoing research projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Virologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Virologist, you need a background in biology or microbiology, laboratory skills, and at least a bachelor's degree in a related field. Familiarity with PCR, cell culture, and laboratory safety protocols, as well as experience using scientific data analysis software, is typically required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills for success in this role. These skills and qualities ensure accurate experimental results, adherence to safety standards, and productive collaboration in research environments.

Job description

The Morsani College of Medicine, Division of Infectious Disease & International Medicine, invites applications for Postdoctoral Scholar Positions to join Dr. Song lab at the University of South Florida. Dr. Song' lab mainly focuses on the molecular virology of HIV, with the long-term goal to develop HIV prevention and functional cure strategies. Currently, there are three research directions: 1) The molecular mechanisms underlying virus entry pathway evolution driven by host immune pressure (the "escape by shifting" concept). This research direction is supported by a recently awarded NIH R01 grant. 2) The CD4 T cell subset preference of HIV in determining HIV transmissibility and pathogenesis. 3) The global phenotypic diversity of HIV and its implications for HIV vaccine and therapeutics.

The lab is located at the USF Research Park Building. The selected candidates will have the opportunity to work in a highly collaborative environment with investigators from the Global Virus Network and USF.

Salary will be competitive with entry-level postdoctoral work, with travel support available to attend national and international meetings.

The position will be available immediately. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled or the search is closed.

Responsibilities:

Research design.

Performing experiments related to the research projects.

Training students and other lab members.

Preparing manuscripts for peer review journals.

Qualifications:

The candidate will have completed a Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D. in a related field.
Those with previous experience in virology, molecular biology and bioinformatics/genetic analysis are particularly encouraged to apply.
