Your Specific Responsibilities:

This position will coordinate the work of the Mycobacteriology Laboratory to ensure the work proceed in a timely and orderly fashion in the isolation, identification and susceptibility testing for tuberculosis and nontuberculous mycobacteria.

Will be trained in different molecular testing and be a part of rotation.  Supports the Mycobacteriology Laboratory by performing molecular assays including PCR Restriction Analysis (PRA), Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), DeoxyriboNucleic Acid (DNA) probe, DNA sequencing (including Multiple drug resistance (MDR) sequencing), Hain assay, and GeneXpert for the rapid and accurate diagnosis of tuberculosis as needed.

Performs all aspects of the susceptibility testing (including Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) test and pncA DNA sequencing) as required by workload and personnel schedules.  Will prepare specimens to be shipped as needed to reference laboratories such as to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Jewish, and Michigan.  

Will read culture as needed and ensure all positive reports are reported as quickly as possible, including copies for faxing, mailing, etc.

Assists microscopy section by accessioning Electronic Laboratory Orders (ELO) and reading Acid-Fast Bacilli (AFB) smears Fluorescent Antibody (FA) and Ziehl-Neelsen (ZN) staining methods.

Participates in the planning for and evaluation of new instrumentation and/or test protocols, especially molecular protocols that may be of future value in identifying Mycobacteria, enhancing safety or reducing turnaround times.  Assists with the training of personnel in the laboratory when necessary.

Ensures that quality assurance records are kept up to date and will supervise staffs in the absence of supervisors to ensure smooth daily operation of TB lab.

Perform other related duties as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of terminology, principles and techniques used in analysis and testing.

Knowledge of procedures, techniques & equipment used in lab testing and analysis.

Skill in the use of lab equipment.

Ability to communicate effectively. 

Ability to work independently. 

Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments. 

Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Qualifications:

Minimum - Florida Clinical or Public Health Laboratory License in Microbiology.

Preferred - associate's degree, Bachelor of Science, Masters, PhD.
