Job Description

This Clinical Laboratory Technician role supports a Central Clinical Laboratory and Clinical Specialty Laboratory that delivers a high volume of both automated and manual clinical testing. The position focuses on operating automated analyzers, processing a variety of specimen types, and performing additional workups such as dilutions to support accurate diagnostic results. The laboratory provides testing in general chemistry, immunoassay, coagulation, hematology, renal and cardiovascular markers, and plays a key role in aiding diagnosis and treatment for patients in both inpatient and emergency settings. Responsibilities

• Operate automated analyzers to perform clinical testing on a wide range of specimen types.
• Process and handle various specimen types according to established laboratory protocols and quality standards.
• Perform additional workups on samples, including dilutions and other pre-analytic or analytic steps, to ensure accurate test results.
• Conduct clinical testing in areas such as general chemistry, immunoassay, coagulation, hematology, renal and cardiovascular markers.
• Support testing for kidney, liver, heart, thyroid and pancreas markers, as well as assays for therapeutic drugs and drugs of abuse.
• Contribute to high-volume testing operations, including participation in emergency department and routine testing workflows.
• Work with both highly automated and manual testing platforms, including lipid metabolism and cardiovascular risk testing, enzyme assays, and nutritional assays.
• Utilize and monitor a variety of laboratory technologies such as mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance, ELISA, chromatography systems, flow cytometry, spectroscopy, combustion, electrophoresis, ultracentrifugation, and automatic chemistry analyzers as required by the lab’s operations.
• Troubleshoot instrumentation issues and escalate problems appropriately to maintain continuous and accurate testing.
• Follow standard operating procedures and quality control protocols to ensure reliable and timely test results.
• Participate in or support research-related activities involving development of new clinical tests, assessment of clinical utility and outcomes, and evaluation of appropriate test utilization.
• Maintain accurate documentation of testing procedures, results, and instrument maintenance in accordance with regulatory and laboratory requirements.
• Collaborate with laboratory colleagues and other healthcare professionals to support efficient workflow and high-quality patient care.
• Adhere to all laboratory safety policies and procedures, including proper handling of specimens and use of equipment.

Essential Skills

• Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a human biological science is required; acceptable degrees include Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Animal Science, Marine Biology, Neuroscience, or similar fields.
• Recent laboratory experience, with no more than one year away from lab work.
• Hands-on experience with medical laboratory testing in a clinical or similar environment.
• Experience with instrumentation operation and troubleshooting in a laboratory setting.
• Knowledge of chemistry and biology principles as applied to clinical laboratory testing.
• Ability to perform specimen processing, including preparation, handling, and storage according to protocol.
• Capability to work with automated analyzers and understand their workflows and maintenance needs.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy in performing tests, recording data, and following procedures.
• Ability to follow complex laboratory protocols and standard operating procedures.
• Strong organizational and time management skills to work effectively in a high-volume testing environment.
• Effective communication skills to interact with laboratory colleagues and other healthcare team members.
• Eligibility for employment with acceptance of candidates holding Optional Practical Training (OPT) status.

Work Environment

The role is based in a high-volume Central Clinical Laboratory and Clinical Specialty Laboratory that performs approximately 5.5 million tests annually, including more than 470,000 renal function and urinalysis tests. The lab supports both emergency department and routine testing, with more than half of its workload dedicated to urgent and routine hospital needs. Team members work with a blend of highly automated systems and manual testing platforms, using advanced technologies such as mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance, ELISA, chromatography systems, flow cytometry, spectroscopy, combustion, electrophoresis, ultracentrifugation, and automatic chemistry analyzers. The schedule follows a two-week rotation that includes both overnight and day shifts. In Week 1, the schedule includes Monday and Tuesday overnight shifts from 8:00 pm to 6:30 am, followed by dayshift on Saturday and Sunday from 7:00 am to 5:30 pm. In Week 2, the schedule includes overnight shifts from Tuesday through Friday from 8:00 pm to 6:30 am. Weekend start times for day shifts may be adjusted between 6:00 am and 8:00 am, with the expectation that the chosen start time remains consistent. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Minneapolis, MN.

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $24.00/hr.

This is a fully onsite position in Minneapolis,MN.
