What is a Temp RN?

A Temp RN, or Temporary Registered Nurse, is a licensed nurse hired to work for a limited period, often to fill staffing shortages or cover leaves of absence. They perform the same duties as permanent RNs, including patient care, administering medications, and collaborating with healthcare teams. This flexible role provides opportunities for nurses to gain diverse experience and work in different locations. Temporary assignments can range from a few days to several months, depending on the employer's needs.

What are some common challenges that Temp RNs face when adapting to new healthcare facilities?

Temp RNs often need to quickly learn new protocols, electronic health record systems, and facility layouts when starting at a new assignment. Adjusting to different team dynamics and patient populations can also be challenging, as each facility may have unique workflows and expectations. However, strong communication skills, flexibility, and a proactive approach to orientation can help Temp RNs integrate smoothly and provide high-quality patient care.
