Work EnvironmentLaboratories in healthcare, research, or industrial settingsLaboratories, hospitals, or clinics
Job ResponsibilitiesPerforming tests, preparing samples, maintaining equipmentAssisting with sample collection, cleaning, and basic lab tasks

The Temp Lab Technician typically has more technical responsibilities and may require specific certifications, working independently in laboratory environments. In contrast, a Lab Assistant provides support tasks, often under supervision. Both roles are essential in laboratory operations but differ in complexity and qualifications.

How much do MLTs make?

Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLTs) in Florida typically earn an average annual salary of around $45,000 to $55,000, depending on experience, certifications, and work setting. Salaries can vary based on location, employer, and whether the technician has specialized skills or advanced certifications such as ASCP. The role often requires certification and familiarity with laboratory equipment and procedures.

What is the minimum salary of a lab technician?

The minimum salary for a lab technician varies by location and experience but generally starts around $30,000 to $40,000 annually. Entry-level positions may pay lower, especially in regions with lower living costs, and certifications or technical skills can influence starting pay.

What is the highest paid lab technician?

The highest paid lab technicians are often those with specialized skills, advanced certifications, or experience in high-demand fields such as pharmaceutical or clinical research laboratories. Salaries can reach over $60,000 annually, especially for senior or supervisory roles in certain industries or regions. Factors like location, education, and technical expertise influence earning potential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Temp Lab Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temp Lab Technician, you need a solid understanding of laboratory procedures, safety protocols, and basic scientific principles, typically supported by a degree or coursework in a scientific field. Familiarity with lab equipment, data entry systems, and sometimes certifications like OSHA or CLIA are commonly required. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective communication make candidates stand out in this role. These skills ensure accurate results, maintain safety standards, and support efficient laboratory operations.

What are some common challenges faced by Temp Lab Technicians, and how can they be addressed?

Temp Lab Technicians often encounter challenges such as quickly adapting to new protocols, working with unfamiliar equipment, and integrating into established teams. Since assignments are temporary, there is usually a steep learning curve and limited time to acclimate. To succeed, it's important to proactively ask questions, review lab protocols in advance, and communicate openly with permanent staff members. Demonstrating flexibility and a strong attention to detail can help build trust and ensure smooth collaboration during your assignment.

Will AI replace lab technician?

AI is unlikely to fully replace lab technicians, as their role involves hands-on tasks, critical thinking, and interpreting complex data that require human judgment. AI can assist with data analysis and automation of routine processes, but skilled technicians are essential for ensuring accuracy, safety, and quality in laboratory work. Combining AI tools with technical expertise enhances efficiency rather than replacing the need for lab technicians.

What are Temp Lab Technicians?

Temp Lab Technicians are laboratory professionals hired on a temporary basis to assist with scientific experiments, sample processing, equipment maintenance, and data recording. They often work in research, clinical, or industrial labs, supporting permanent staff during peak workloads or special projects. Their responsibilities can vary depending on the lab's focus, but typically include preparing samples, running tests, and ensuring that equipment is clean and functional. Temporary lab technicians are valuable for their flexibility and ability to quickly adapt to different laboratory environments.

Job description

Job Title: Lab Technician

Job Description

The Lab Technician runs the molecular pipeline in a diagnostic laboratory while supporting physical work in an inoculum production lab. The role involves working with a wide range of plant pathogens and plant species, performing molecular and immunological assays, and accurately interpreting diagnostic results. Throughout most of the year, time is split between the diagnostic and inoculum production labs, with the summer season focused primarily on diagnostic lab activities.

Responsibilities

  • Run the molecular diagnostic pipeline to support accurate and timely plant pathology testing.
  • Perform physical lab work to support inoculum production, including preparation, handling, and processing of materials.
  • Work with a variety of organisms, including bacteria, fungi, plant pathogens, and plant tissues such as wheat and other crops.
  • Apply and maintain sterile and aseptic techniques in all laboratory procedures to prevent contamination.
  • Culture organisms and run assays using ELISA and PCR to detect and identify plant pathogens.
  • Perform DNA and RNA extractions from plant and microbial samples for downstream molecular analyses.
  • Use microscopy to observe samples and identify pathogens based on morphological characteristics.
  • Follow established standard operating procedures (SOPs) and laboratory protocols consistently and accurately.
  • Read, analyze, and interpret assay results, including ELISA and PCR outputs, to support diagnostic conclusions.
  • Document experimental procedures, observations, and results clearly and accurately in lab records.
  • Collaborate with team members during training and routine work to ensure consistent and high-quality laboratory practices.
  • Support seasonal diagnostic workloads, particularly during the busy May–November period, by managing multiple tasks and priorities.

Essential Skills

  • Associate degree in biotechnology or a related field, or
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, genetics, or a related discipline.
  • Preferred: At least 1 year of laboratory experience outside of academic coursework, or strong, demonstrable college laboratory experience.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting up to 40 pounds, as part of inoculum production and general lab duties.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Interest in plant pathology and diagnosing diseases in diverse plant species.
  • Experience working with plant pathogens, including bacteria, fungi, and other organisms affecting crops.
  • Experience working with agricultural or plant-related samples such as corn, soybean, wheat, and sorghum.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage work split between diagnostic and inoculum production labs.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively within a laboratory team.
  • Willingness to learn new techniques and adapt to evolving diagnostic methods and technologies.

Work Environment

The role is based in a diagnostic and inoculum production laboratory that focuses on plant pathology and agricultural diagnostics. You will work with a wide variety of plant species, including corn, soybean, wheat, sorghum, and other crops, as well as bacteria, fungi, and plant pathogens. Training occurs directly with experienced team members, providing hands-on guidance in both molecular diagnostics and inoculum production. The position requires the ability to lift up to 40 pounds and perform physical tasks as part of routine lab operations. The busy season runs from May through November, during which workload and sample volume increase significantly. Standard hours are Monday through Friday, with flexibility in start and end times as long as the schedule remains consistent.
