Temp Design information

What is a temp design?

A Temp Design job refers to a temporary position in which a designer is hired for a specific project or a short-term period. These roles are common in industries like graphic design, web design, and fashion, where companies may need extra help during busy times or for special campaigns. Temp designers often work as freelancers or through staffing agencies, providing creative solutions without the commitment of a permanent position. This flexibility benefits both employers and designers, allowing for dynamic work environments and varied experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temp design professional?

To thrive as a Temp Design professional, you need a solid background in graphic or visual design, proficiency in design principles, and a relevant degree or portfolio. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and project management systems is typically expected. Strong communication, adaptability, and time management skills help you efficiently collaborate and meet tight deadlines in diverse settings. These skills ensure high-quality, consistent design deliverables that meet client expectations in fast-paced, temporary assignments.

What are some typical challenges temp design professionals might face when joining a new team or project?

Temp Design professionals often need to quickly adapt to new team dynamics, workflows, and project goals, which can be challenging given the limited onboarding time. They may also need to familiarize themselves rapidly with brand guidelines, design tools specific to the employer, and existing project files. Strong communication skills and flexibility are essential, as temp designers frequently collaborate with full-time staff, provide fresh perspectives, and must deliver quality work within tight deadlines. Building rapport and understanding client or stakeholder expectations swiftly helps ensure a smooth transition and project success.

What is the difference between Temp Design vs Design Assistant?

AspectTemp DesignDesign Assistant

Employer & Industry UsageUsed across fashion, interior, graphic, and product design industriesCommonly employed in fashion, interior, and graphic design firms

Temp Design roles are usually short-term, project-based positions requiring minimal formal credentials, ideal for gaining experience. Design Assistants typically hold relevant education and support senior designers in ongoing projects. Both roles are integral in creative industries but differ mainly in duration, credentials, and scope of responsibilities.

Store Lead (Temporary)

Bridgeport Village, Tigard, Oregon

About Peak Design

Peak Design makes radical, meticulously-engineered gear for detail-obsessed people. Our backpacks, travel bags, camera gear, and phone accessories are used dang-near everywhere. If you've visited Machu Picchu, Tokyo, or an REI store in the last 10 years, you've been within ogling distance of a Peak Design product.

Alongside our award-winning gear is a brand that truly reflects who we are as peoplepassionate about design, deeply caring about our environmental and social impact, unafraid to speak up, radically transparent, and generally down to clown. Whether we're explaining a product, running a sale, launching a nonprofit, sponsoring a film, or razzing the biggest company on Earth, we do it with our trademark honesty, warmth, and wit. Through our products and our brand, we aim to create delight, and leave this world better than how we found it.

About the Job

We're looking for a curious, grounded, and highly self-directed Store Lead to run the day-to-day experience at our Bridgeport Village store.

This is a hands-on retail role. At least 80% of your time will be spent doing Gear Expert work: helping customers, demonstrating products, recommending the right setup, and driving sales. Because the Bridgeport Village store operates with a small team and often with one person working independently, you should be comfortable owning the customer experience and store operations without needing constant direction.

This isn't a traditional management role with a large team to supervise. It's a role for someone who enjoys working independently, connecting with customers, and taking pride in keeping a small store running beautifully.

Role Requirements
  • Availability: Available for closing shifts ~12:30 - 8:30pm
  • 13 years of retail, sales, hospitality, or customer-facing experience
  • Comfortable working independently for extended periods
  • Strong communication and customer-service instincts
  • Confidence initiating conversations and guiding customers through a sale
  • Dependable, organized, and able to manage time without close supervision
  • Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a clean, polished store
  • Curiosity about people and products
  • Sound judgment and the ability to solve everyday problems independently
  • Receptive to feedback and motivated to keep learning
  • Ability to safely lift and move merchandise as required
  • Availability to work 40 hours per week, including weekends and holidays as scheduled

Nice-to-haves

  • Interest in photography, the outdoors, design, motorcycles, bicycles, or travel
  • Experience selling technical products
  • Experience with inventory management or visual merchandising
  • Familiarity with Peak Design products
Salary Range

Peak Design's purpose is to create happy, meaningful lives for the people that work here. This includes our Retail team. We bring this purpose to life by:

  • Offering a competitive hourly wage ($22.50/hour) that honors your talents and professional experience.
  • Offering non-traditional and generous perks for part-time employees such as accrued paid time off, and Peak Design products and discounts.
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging

At Peak Design we believe a diverse team is an innovative team and something worth celebrating. A range of perspectives and backgrounds creates a stronger and more creative work environment (not to mention more fun). We're committed to equality and inclusivity across race, gender, age, religion, identity, and experience.

Some candidates may see a long list of job requirements and feel discouraged because they don't match every single bullet point we strongly encourage you to apply anyway! If what we do resonates with you, and you feel excited and able to contribute, we're equally stoked for the opportunity to engage with you.
