What is an entry level design job?

An entry level design job is a starting position in the design industry, typically suited for recent graduates or those with limited professional experience. These roles often involve assisting senior designers, creating basic design assets, and learning industry tools and workflows. Entry level designers may work in fields such as graphic design, web design, or industrial design, and are expected to have a foundational understanding of design principles and software like Adobe Creative Suite. The goal is to build practical skills, gain experience, and develop a professional portfolio to advance in the field.

What types of projects and responsibilities can an entry level design professional expect in their first year?

Entry-level design professionals typically work on a variety of supporting tasks, such as preparing drafts, creating visual assets, and assisting with layout or branding projects. They often collaborate closely with senior designers and art directors, gaining exposure to client feedback and the revision process. While responsibilities may start with smaller assignments, there are frequent opportunities to contribute ideas during team brainstorming sessions and to gradually take on more complex projects as skills develop. This hands-on experience is crucial for building a strong portfolio and understanding real-world design workflows.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Designer, you need a solid understanding of design principles, proficiency in visual communication, and a relevant degree or coursework in graphic, web, or industrial design. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and basic knowledge of design systems or prototyping platforms is important. Strong attention to detail, creativity, collaboration, and openness to feedback set standout candidates apart. These skills and qualities enable designers to produce high-quality work, adapt to team needs, and grow in a fast-evolving creative field.

Position Summary
We are seeking an entry-level Hardware Design Engineer to contribute to the design, development, validation, and support of advanced electronic hardware for test and measurement products. This position is ideal for a recent college graduate with a strong foundation in electrical engineering principles and a passion for circuit design, PCB development, and hands-on laboratory work.
The successful candidate will work under the guidance of senior engineers to develop analog, mixed-signal, and digital circuitry while gaining experience in schematic capture, PCB layout, hardware bring-up, signal integrity, and product development processes.
Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the design and development of PCB-based hardware systems from concept through validation.
  • Create and maintain schematics, engineering documentation, and design records using industry-standard CAD tools.
  • Support PCB layout activities by working with senior engineers to define component placement, routing requirements, and design constraints.
  • Participate in board bring-up, debugging, and validation of prototype hardware.
  • Apply fundamental signal integrity principles, including transmission line concepts, impedance control, termination techniques, and high-speed routing guidelines.
  • Design and analyze basic analog circuits including amplifiers, filters, power supply circuits, signal conditioning, and data converter interfaces.
  • Support laboratory testing and characterization using oscilloscopes, signal generators, power supplies, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, and other electronic test equipment.
  • Assist in investigating and resolving hardware issues through structured debugging and root-cause analysis.
  • Participate in schematic reviews, layout reviews, and engineering design reviews.
  • Collaborate with systems, FPGA, firmware, software, mechanical, manufacturing, and test engineers to support successful product development.
  • Support manufacturing and sustaining engineering activities, including troubleshooting production and field issues.
  • Follow established engineering processes, quality systems, and documentation standards.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 0-2 years of industry experience, including internships, co-op assignments, senior design projects, or research experience.
  • Understanding of analog and digital circuit fundamentals.
  • Basic knowledge of PCB design concepts, including schematic capture and multilayer board layouts.
  • Familiarity with signal integrity fundamentals, transmission lines, timing, and high-speed interfaces.
  • Understanding of common electronic components such as operational amplifiers, ADCs, DACs, regulators, MOSFETs, and communication devices.
  • Familiarity with common serial communication protocols such as I²C, SPI, UART, and GPIO interfaces.
  • Experience using laboratory instrumentation for troubleshooting and measurement.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well within a collaborative engineering team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with schematic capture and PCB layout tools such as Siemens Xpedition, Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, or similar.
  • Exposure to analog circuit simulation tools such as LTspice, PSpice, or equivalent.
  • Experience with signal integrity or power integrity concepts through coursework or projects.
  • Familiarity with Python, MATLAB, or similar scripting environments for test automation and data analysis.
  • Experience developing and debugging microcontroller-based systems.
  • Knowledge of Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Testability (DFT) principles.
  • Participation in engineering clubs, competitions, research projects, or personal electronics projects.
