What Is a Technology Manager?

Technology managers oversee the use and implementation of technology within their organization. This job involves monitoring other IT workers and supervising all technical projects. Typical duties include selecting the computer systems to be used and overseeing installation and implementation. You also manage the troubleshooting of hardware and software. This career requires a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field. Additional qualifications include communication skills and management experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Technology Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technology Manager, you need a solid background in IT infrastructure, project management, and leadership, often supported by a degree in computer science or information technology. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), cloud platforms, and certifications such as PMP or ITIL are frequently required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and team-building abilities help a Technology Manager navigate complex projects and lead diverse technical teams. These skills are crucial for delivering technology solutions efficiently, ensuring project success, and fostering innovation within organizations.

How does a Technology Manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams within an organization?

Technology Managers play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between technical teams and other departments such as product management, operations, and executive leadership. They regularly participate in meetings to align technology initiatives with business goals, facilitate communication between software developers and stakeholders, and help prioritize project timelines based on organizational needs. Effective collaboration often involves translating complex technical information into actionable items for non-technical team members, ensuring that projects move forward smoothly and meet strategic objectives.

Job description

About Us

EMCOR Construction Services (ECS) is part of EMCOR Group, Inc. (NYSE: EME), a Fortune 500 leader in mechanical and electrical construction, industrial and energy infrastructure, and building services for a diverse range of businesses. ECS is a nationwide group of 50+ operating companies with over 30,000 employees and annual revenues of $10.7 billion. Our operating companies are mechanical and commercial electrical contractors with expertise that includes virtually all U.S. commercial, healthcare, institutional, education, hospitality, manufacturing, transportation, and water and wastewater markets. We also have several operating companies that focus on commercial fire protection. They provide integrated life safety solutions, including fire detection and suppression systems, and the most advanced security technology available today. The ECS headquarters team provides key support for its electrical and mechanical companies, including finance and accounting, human resources, legal, national purchasing and information technology.

Job Summary

The Construction AI Technology Manager will help our operating companies integrate artificial intelligence into the business in a practical, disciplined, and useful way. This role will focus initially on Microsoft Copilot and approved Microsoft 365 applications, helping operating companies identify where AI can improve productivity, communication, reporting, and administrative leverage.

This is not a purely technical role and it is not a corporate compliance position. The mission is to help operating companies turn AI from a general concept into real business value by identifying high-impact use cases, supporting implementation, training teams, and sharing practical successes across the organization.

The right candidate will combine strong business judgment, technology fluency, and a hands-on implementation mindset. This person must be able to work effectively with independent operating company leaders, understand how work actually gets done, and help teams adopt new tools without overcomplicating the process.

Compensation Range:   $110,000 - $140,000

This position is bonus eligible.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Partner with operating company leadership and functional teams to identify practical AI use cases that improve speed, consistency, communication, and administrative efficiency.
  • Lead the rollout and adoption of Microsoft Copilot and related approved AI tools across operating companies in coordination with IT and security requirements.
  • Evaluate workflows in areas such as estimating, project management, procurement, finance support, service administration, HR support, and executive reporting to determine where AI can add value.
  • Design and deliver training for leaders, managers, and staff on effective use of Microsoft Copilot and related tools.
  • Teach users how to apply AI appropriately, including prompting, workflow integration, output review, and responsible business use.
  • Launch and support pilot initiatives with selected operating companies and business functions.
  • Document lessons learned, successful use cases, and repeatable practices that can be shared across the organization.
  • Help create role-based guides, practical examples, training materials, and implementation playbooks.
  • Reinforce appropriate guardrails so AI is used as a productivity tool and not as a substitute for technical expertise, management review, or sound business judgement.
  • Work closely with enterprise leaders, operating company teams, and internal IT/security contacts to align implementation efforts with business needs and approved standards.
  • Requires approximately 40% +/- travel.

To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. • Experience training or enabling users with a range of technical skill levels.
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills with the ability to explain technical capabilities in practical business terms.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple implementation efforts at one time.
  • Strong judgment and the ability to distinguish between meaningful business value and technology for technology's sake.
  • Construction, building services, industrial services, or field-oriented operational experience is highly preferred.
  • Must be able to travel approximately 40% +/-.
