Job description

POSITION SUMMARY
The Director, Insight Engineering is a senior Technology leadership role responsible for building and operationalizing IGEN's enterprise data foundation - establishing the platforms, governance standards, and data products that enable trusted, insight-driven decision-making across the organization. This role is a member of the Technology leadership team, reporting to the Chief Technologist, and operates at a senior level within the Technology organization. The Director leads the design, delivery, and ongoing operation of IGEN's data platform, which is built on Snowflake, and the analytics and reporting capabilities that serve internal business functions and inform product strategy.
This is a foundational hire - the first dedicated data leader in the organization. The Director will build and lead IGEN's Data & Insights team, encompassing Data Engineers, BI Analysts, and Reporting Analysts, while establishing the data engineering practices, governance frameworks, and Center of Excellence (CoE) operating model that make the function sustainable and scalable. The role requires equal strength in hands-on technical execution and stakeholder-facing leadership, with the ability to translate compliance domain complexity into trustworthy, actionable data assets and lead a team that delivers against a clear, business-aligned roadmap.
IGEN, a division of U.S. Venture, is a leading tax compliance software company trusted by industry leaders. Our tax compliance platform, powered by a data engine, gives you the complete toolkit for reducing redundancy and risk while managing tax compliance implications across the organization.
This position will be located at our Corporate Headquarters in Appleton, WI.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Data Platform Engineering
  • Design, build, and operate IGEN's enterprise data platform - Snowflake (warehouse) and associated ingestion and transformation tooling - with production-grade Dev / Test / Prod pipeline separation and RBAC access controls
  • Own the ingestion, transformation, and maintenance of all source system connections - targeting coverage of IGEN's core operational systems, including tax determination, client onboarding, filing, and reconciliation workflows
  • Establish and enforce data quality standards, validation frameworks, and monitoring practices across all pipelines
  • Manage platform reliability, performance, and cost optimization - maintaining production uptime targets and proactively addressing capacity and efficiency needs

Data Governance & CoE
  • Establish and operate IGEN's Data Center of Excellence - defining the intake process, prioritization framework, delivery cadence, and SLA commitments communicated to business partners
  • Build and maintain the enterprise KPI catalog - ensuring every published metric has a documented definition, verified source mapping, and a named data steward
  • Define and enforce data classification, sensitivity tiers, and access control policies in partnership with engineering and compliance leadership
  • Drive adoption of data governance practices across Technology and business functions - acting as the organizational authority on what data means and how it should be used

Analytics & Business Intelligence
  • Partner with Product, Client Experience, Sales, and Finance to identify, prioritize, and deliver high-value analytics use cases - translating business questions into governed, trusted data products
  • Design and deliver BI reporting infrastructure - dashboards, certified datasets, and self-service analytics capabilities that enable business stakeholders to operate independently
  • Establish IGEN's KPI framework spanning key domains including client onboarding velocity, tax determination accuracy, filing performance, reconciliation exception rates, and client health
  • Champion a data-driven culture - building data literacy across business functions and helping leaders interpret and act on analytics output

Strategy & Roadmap
  • Own the data and analytics roadmap - prioritizing investments in platform, governance, and analytics delivery against IGEN's FY2027 transformation milestones and beyond
  • Provide technical leadership on data architecture decisions - evaluating tooling, patterns, and approaches that support IGEN's compliance domain complexity and scale requirements
  • Position IGEN's data foundation as the infrastructure layer for future AI and automation initiatives - ensuring data quality, lineage, and governance standards support agentic use cases
  • Contribute to IGEN's product strategy by surfacing compliance data patterns, filing performance insights, and jurisdictional exposure trends that deepen client value

Team Leadership & Development
  • Hire, onboard, and develop direct reports across the Data & Insights team - Data Engineers, BI Analysts, and Reporting Analysts - building a high-performing team with clear roles, expectations, and individual growth paths aligned to IGEN's transformation roadmap
  • Establish engineering practices for the data team - code review standards, documentation requirements, sprint participation, and Definition of Done criteria aligned with IGEN's Agile operating model

Additional Job Responsibilities
  • Cultivate U.S. Venture's values while inspiring, empowering, recognizing, and guiding team members
  • Live our values of High Performance, Caring Relationships, Strategic Foresight, and Entrepreneurial Spirit
  • Find A Better Way by championing continuous improvement and quality control efforts to identify opportunities to innovate and improve efficiency, accuracy, and standardization
  • Continuously learn and develop self professionally
  • Support corporate efforts for safety, government compliance, and all other company policies and procedures
  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or a related data discipline
  • 5+ years in a data leadership role - managing a team, owning a data platform, or serving as a principal technical contributor with cross-functional accountability
  • Hands-on experience with cloud data warehouses (Snowflake strongly preferred) and ELT/ETL tooling (dbt or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated experience building or scaling a data function from an early or foundational state - establishing practices, governance, and culture alongside technical delivery
  • Strong analytical and communication skills - ability to translate complex data concepts into clear, actionable insights for non-technical business stakeholders
  • Experience defining and delivering a KPI framework or governed data product catalog
  • Proficiency in SQL and working knowledge of at least one programming language used in data workflows (Python preferred)
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics, or a related field - or equivalent professional experience

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with excise tax, indirect tax, or fuel distribution compliance workflows
  • Experience implementing data governance frameworks, data catalogs, or CoE operating models in a mid-market software or SaaS environment
  • Hands-on experience with dbt for transformation layer management
  • Familiarity with BI platforms such as Power BI, Tableau, or Looker
