JOB DESCRIPTION
At Axcelis Technologies, you'll join a company at the forefront of semiconductor manufacturing, where our ion implantation systems and Purion platform help customers achieve the precision, purity, and productivity required for next-generation devices. This is an opportunity to shape how complex technology is understood and used in the field. As a Product Documentation Technical Writer, your work will directly support customer success by making critical information clear, accurate, and accessible-helping users install, operate, maintain, and upgrade advanced equipment with confidence. If you enjoy working closely with engineering teams, learning sophisticated systems, and creating documentation that has real-world impact, this role offers the chance to contribute to both innovation and usability in a highly technical industry.
Position Summary
Axcelis is seeking a Product Documentation Technical Writer to create clear, accurate, and user-focused documentation for complex capital equipment. In this role, you will partner with engineering, manufacturing, and product teams to develop and maintain manuals, procedures, and visual content that help customers safely install, operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and upgrade our systems. The ideal candidate is a strong technical communicator who can translate complex mechanical and process information into documentation that is precise, accessible, and easy to use.
Core Responsibilities
  • Create, edit, and maintain product documentation, including operating manuals, installation procedures, maintenance instructions, troubleshooting guides, and upgrade documentation.
  • Work closely with engineers, technicians, and manufacturing teams to gather technical information and validate content for accuracy and usability.
  • Translate complex equipment and process details into clear, structured documentation for customer and internal audiences.
  • Develop or enhance illustrations and visual procedure content using CAD-based or other technical visualization tools.
  • Update documentation to reflect engineering changes, product improvements, and applicable documentation standards.
  • Support new product introductions and continuous improvement initiatives by delivering high-quality documentation on schedule.

Required Qualifications
  • Experience creating technical documentation for complex equipment, manufacturing processes, or other highly technical products.
  • Proficiency with Adobe FrameMaker, Adobe Experience Manager, content management systems, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Experience using CreoView or a comparable 3D CAD visualization tool.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly for multiple audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple documentation projects.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional technical teams.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with semiconductor manufacturing environments; experience with ion implanter systems is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of SEMI S2/S13 guidelines and other documentation-related industry standards.
  • Understanding of document control processes such as ECOs, DCOs, redlines, and revision workflows.
  • Mechanical aptitude and comfort working directly with equipment, tools, and technical subject matter experts.
