Technical Writer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Writer, you need strong writing, editing, and research skills, often supported by a degree in English, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with documentation tools such as Microsoft Word, Adobe FrameMaker, MadCap Flare, and content management systems is typically required. Attention to detail, the ability to simplify complex information, and effective collaboration are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure the creation of clear, accurate, and user-friendly documentation that supports product usability and end-user satisfaction.

How does a technical writer typically collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) during documentation projects?

Technical Writers frequently work closely with subject matter experts to gather accurate information and clarify complex concepts. This collaboration often involves conducting interviews, attending product demos, and reviewing drafts together to ensure technical accuracy and clarity. Building a strong rapport with SMEs is essential, as it helps streamline the review process and results in higher-quality documentation. Effective communication and a proactive approach are key to overcoming challenges such as limited SME availability or evolving product features.

What is the difference between Technical Writer vs Technical Editor?

AspectTechnical WriterTechnical Editor

Both roles are essential for producing clear, accurate technical materials in various industries.

Are technical writers paid well?

Technical writers are generally paid competitive salaries that vary based on experience, industry, and location. Entry-level positions typically start lower, while experienced technical writers with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher wages, especially in technology and engineering sectors.

Can you work remotely as a technical writer?

Many technical writers work remotely, especially those with strong writing, communication, and technical skills. Remote opportunities are common in industries such as software, engineering, and technology, often requiring proficiency with tools like Markdown, Adobe FrameMaker, or content management systems. Flexibility varies by employer, but remote work is widely available for qualified technical writers.

Job description

The future you want is within reach. Let's build it together.

At PCL, we build the places where life happens and find camaraderie in the process. We're a community of builders committed to building better communities. That's why we're always looking ahead, and not just to the next project or what's next in our industry.

We're also looking at what's next for you and how we can help you build a career you're proud of. As a student at PCL, you will get the opportunity for challenging work assignments in a supportive work environment which promotes personal and professional growth.

We are seeking a Technical Writer Student for our Edmonton North American Headquarters, that is available for 4 months starting September 8, 2026. As a Technical Writer Student you will contribute to our team by:

Responsibilities
  • Create, maintain, and continuously improve user-facing documentation for application releases, including work instructions, stepbystep guides, job aids, and process walkthroughs aligned to real business scenarios.
  • Translate system functionality, business processes, and feature changes into clear, intuitive, and usable instructions for end users.
  • Ensure documentation reflects actual user workflows and delivered system behavior, not just intended designs.
  • Validate documentation accuracy by working closely with Analysts, QA, and Training teams.
  • Participate in documentation review cycles to ensure accuracy, consistency, and release readiness prior to deployments.
  • Identify and manage documentation impacts resulting from new features, enhancements, process changes, and release updates.
  • Maintain documentation standards, including structure, naming conventions, and consistency across features and releases.
  • Capture and clarify business and process requirements to ensure features include sufficient context for effective user instruction creation.
  • Maintain traceability between system changes and impacted user documentation to ensure alignment and completeness.
  • Support release readiness, user enablement, and adoption by coordinating documentation updates with release schedules and ensuring known changes or limitations are clearly communicated.
What you will bring to the role:
  • Strong userfocused technical writing and documentation skills.
  • Experience creating instructional content for enterprise or largescale business applications.
  • Handson experience with ClickLearn or similar workinstruction and user enablement tools.
  • Ability to translate complex system behavior into clear, nontechnical language.
  • Experience working in Agile or iterative delivery environments.
  • Familiarity with Agile tools such as Azure DevOps or Jira.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with crossfunctional teams.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple documentation streams across parallel releases.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team environment.

Next Step:

  • Please note that candidates who have been selected to move forward to the next stage of the recruitment process will receive an email to complete a short online video interview.
