What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Technical Program Manager, and why are they important?
What Is a Technical Program Manager?
A technical program manager oversees a company’s technical projects, such as implementing new network systems or developing new products. Job duties include supervising development teams, assessing work schedules, assessing productivity, and addressing any quality assurance issues that arise during production. Technical program managers are often responsible for creating reports to upper management based on the functions of the products and making suggestions on how to streamline future projects. They may also help the organization develop new strategies related to production and sales goals.
What is the difference between Technical Program Manager vs Software Engineer?
| Aspect | Technical Program Manager | Software Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Role | Oversees project execution, coordinates teams, manages timelines | Designs, develops, tests software applications |
| Required Skills | Project management, communication, technical understanding | Programming, software development, problem-solving |
| Work Environment | Cross-functional teams, project-focused | Development teams, coding environments |
| Certifications | PMP, Agile certifications often preferred | None mandatory, but certifications like Scrum or AWS helpful |
While Technical Program Managers coordinate and oversee projects across teams, Software Engineers focus on building and coding software solutions. Both roles require technical understanding, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

Meet the team:
The Senior Technical Program Manager (Sr TPM) will lead complex, crossfunctional technical programs supporting the development, commercialization, and lifecycle management of Dexcom's CGM products. This role operates at the intersection of hardware, software, operations, quality, and regulatory, ensuring programs are executed with rigor in a highly regulated medical device environment.
The Sr TPM is accountable for endtoend program execution-driving alignment across engineering, manufacturing, quality, regulatory, and supply chain teams to deliver AI and analytic products on time, in scope, and in compliance with internal and external requirements
This role requires a strong technical background and experience in product development/project management, ideally in a regulated environment such as medical device development.

- Risk Management & Mitigation: Proactively identify technical risks (e.g., model drift, data drift, bottlenecks) and devise solutions, ensuring high-quality, production-ready AI models.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with R&D, Engineering, IT, Quality, Legal, and Security teams to ensure compliant and safe AI deployment, such as human-in-the-loop (HITL) processes.
- Tooling & Process Improvement: Develop tools and workflows to enhance data collection, model evaluation, and production efficiency.
What makes you successful:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field
- 7+ years of experience in technical program management or project leadership roles
- Proven experience managing programs in a regulated environment (medical device, biotech, or similar)
- Proven experience as an Agile Scrum Master, with understanding of Data Science methodologies
- Demonstrated ability to lead crossfunctional teams without direct authority
- Excellent communication skills, with experience presenting to senior leadership
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills
- PMP, PgMP, Scrum Master or similar certification
- Lean Six Sigma certification
What you'll get:
- A front row seat to life changing CGM technology. Learn about our brave #dexcomwarriors community.
- A full and comprehensive benefits program.
- Growth opportunities on a global scale.
