Technical Director | Cornell College | Mount Vernon, IA| Hybrid

Who are we looking for?
The Technical Director (TD) is responsible for the successful creation and support of the institution's technology including all enterprise applications and associated computing environment, university web/portal services, system administration, network, classroom, and user support. The TD will be responsible for making key design and implementation decisions with the technical and application teams such as scheduling tasks, tracking dependencies, managing change requests, and guaranteeing the quality of delivery while educating the technical and application teams on best practices.
The TD will ensure that the client's service investments generate the highest value. The TD will assume all day-to-day responsibility for the management of enterprise applications, hardware, software, services, and project management. The TD will also be responsible for the on-site staff that support the users, as well as function as the liaison for project teams that include both on-site and Dynamic Campus shared resources ensuring the client's business needs and objectives are effectively integrated into the use and functionality of all solutions. The TD will ensure adherence to best practices and proven methodologies to promote continuous information operations and the integration of new value-added technical services and technology.
How will you be engaged?
A Dynamic Campus TD is assigned to our partner institutions and partners with the client Contract Administrator, often the CFO, Provost, or the President/Chancellor. Our TDs are deeply engaged as trusted advisors to the IT staff and departments at the institution. Strong people skills, a high level of emotional intelligence (EQ), and a consultative approach to building rapport and understanding business needs are a must.

Our TDs and the site teams are actively supported by everyone in Dynamic Campus. Each TD joins our team of TDs and has access to them for counsel, communities of practice, and deep collaboration. Our TDs have a dedicated site staff augmented through access to a rich portfolio of professional services that include our Dynamic Campus Talent Cloud™, a nationwide team of higher education IT experts supporting the needs of our partners on campus or remotely.
Our TDs have access to a comprehensive resource library of best practice policies, procedures, and documents, and an exceptional HR team that supports all aspects of both personal and staff HR needs.

Hours of operation are Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. Hours may vary. Hybrid.
Responsibilities:
  • Supervise applications, network operations, project management and user services/media staff including hiring, training, evaluating and disciplining
  • Guide or provide direction to other technical staff, contract staff and/or student employees
  • Determine appropriate coverage for all hours of operation
  • Consult with management and review project proposals to determine goals, timeframes, funding limitations, procedures for accomplishing administrative computing projects, staffing requirements, and allotment of resources
  • Assist with developing and presenting the Annual Work Portfolio (AWP) to the CIO and implement the agreed upon AWP
  • Update the AWP monthly, addressing issues and making recommendations for action
  • Supervise development of project plans specifying scope, goals and objectives, strategy, schedules, risks, contingencies, and allocation of available resources
  • Implement quality assurance methodologies covering test plans, change/patch management, and problem management
  • Align functional processes with software capabilities
  • Establish technical standards to ensure long-term, cost-effective management and support of the currently installed systems and other enterprise solutions
  • Negotiate with vendors for the selected environment applications, servers and devices
  • Follow established standards and procedures to track and measure projects' progression
  • Evaluate interview candidates for technical positions
  • Scout for and evaluate new technology and tools as opportunities for innovation
  • Provide input to the other disciplines on the practicality of initial design goals and impact to the overall project timeline
  • Identify poor performing systems that need upgrades or improvement and schedules corrective action, when possible
  • Contribute to and maintain system standards including Change Management
  • Oversee daily system monitoring, verify integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, review system and application logs, and verify completion of scheduled jobs such as backups
  • Supervise ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required
  • Work with Business Unit leaders to prioritize and rationalize new requests
  • Collaborate with the On-Demand team and Business Units to deliver enhancement and new business application solutions

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technologies or related field, or an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training
  • Director level experience
  • Experience directing technical staff members
  • Experience effectively communicating with leadership team members
  • Experience with leading and involvement in IT projects
  • Candidate should be able to identify when to ask for help and guidance from DC support teams
  • Strong understanding of technical troubleshooting methodology
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication and presentation skills across organizational boundaries
  • Ability to work with a range of technical staff to develop joint solutions
  • Ability to achieve efficiencies through workflow improvement

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 3 or more years of Higher Education experience as a TD or similar leadership position.
  • Experience with higher education administrative system software
  • Project management knowledge and experience
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement IT strategies, tactical plans, and annual work plans
  • Experience with budget management
