Job description
INTERPRETER FOR THE DEAF
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree or interpreter training program or work three or more years in an area related to the field of deaf education and maintain at least one of the following:
- Certification by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)
- National Association for the Deaf (NA) level IV or better
- Quality Assurance Screening Test (QAST) Level III or better.
- National Council for Interpreters (NCI) Certification
- Signed Exact English Level 3.5 or better
- Educational interpreters Proficiency Assessment (EIPA) Level 3.5 or better
This job requires interpersonal skills to work effectively and collaboratively with staff and students within the instructional setting, as well as a comprehensive general practices of special education and the deaf culture. Job requires occasional bending/stooping/squatting/crouching/kneeling, climbing, reaching above the shoulder and pushing/pulling. Job requires occasional carrying/lifting up to 50 pounds. Job requires employee to use both hands for repetitive actions involving simple/firm grasping and fine manipulation. Employee must possess hearing and speaking abilities to monitor equipment and communicate with employees, students, and parents. The Board of Education and Superintendent may approve alternatives to the listed qualifications.
CONTRACT: Days Schools in Session
WORKING HOURS: 7 hours daily, usually between 8:00 a.m. to 3:30p.m.
REPORTS TO: Classroom Teacher/Principal
EVALUATED BY: Principal
SUPERVISES:
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Interprets all classroom instruction including PE, Art and other electives in the language most used and understood by the student. This responsibility may occur in a variety of settings beyond the classroom including, but not limited to, field trips, club meetings, after school programs, assemblies, extra-curricular activities, school counseling sessions and school sponsored trips.
- Pre-teaches, re-teaches or tutors deaf/HI in all curriculum areas as needed under the supervision of the classroom teacher.
- Maintains informal records on language acquisition, tutor logs and progress.
- Attends and keeps informal notes for IEP meetings.
- Works within the classroom as a team member and Interpreter for the whole class.
- Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentially of information about students as is expected of the licensed teachers.
- Adheres to the Educational Code of Ethics as set forth in RID.
- Interpreters shall keep current with changing technology and vocabulary.
- Interpreters will develop a personal plan of preparation for skill development in order to satisfy the State Requirements.
- Interpreters shall conduct a short in-service at the beginning of each school year for school employees
- Attends required meetings.
- Performs other duties as assigned
