Job Description
Purpose:
The Director, Tax Technology will serve as a strategic leader within the global Finance & Tax Transformation organization, responsible for defining and advancing the long-term vision for technology-enabled tax operations across AbbVie. This role is accountable for driving transformation by leveraging advanced technologies-including AI, automation, and data analytics-to modernize tax processes, enhance decision-making, and improve compliance and reporting outcomes.
This leader will partner closely with senior Tax, Finance, and BTS (Business Technology Systems) stakeholders to identify scalable, future-ready solutions that optimize global direct and indirect tax processes. The role will champion the adoption of AI-enabled capabilities to unlock efficiencies, generate insights, and proactively manage risk across the tax function.
This role will translate strategic priorities into executable roadmaps, lead cross-functional initiatives, and ensure alignment with broader Finance Transformation objectives. This highly visible position requires strong executive presence, the ability to influence at all levels, and a track record of driving sustainable process improvement through technology innovation.
Responsibilities:
  • Define and lead the Tax Technology strategy and multi-year roadmap, incorporating AI enablement, automation, and advanced analytics to transform global tax processes and capabilities.
  • Oversee the design, implementation, and optimization of tax technology solutions supporting tax planning, compliance, and reporting (e.g., ASC 740, SOX, Transfer Pricing, indirect taxes), ensuring alignment with enterprise systems and data strategies.
  • Serve as the primary advisor to senior tax and finance leadership on technology trends, AI applications, and digital innovation opportunities within the tax function.
  • Champion the use of AI and intelligent automation to streamline workflows, enhance data-driven insights, and enable predictive capabilities within tax operations.
  • Establish and govern data management and integration frameworks, ensuring seamless data flows between tax systems, ERP platforms, and upstream/downstream finance processes.
  • Partner with Finance, BTS, and Operations to align technology investments with enterprise priorities and optimize end-to-end process effectiveness.
  • Drive stakeholder engagement and communication with senior leadership, external auditors, and advisors to ensure alignment, transparency, and successful execution of transformation initiatives.
  • Continuously monitor the evolving tax technology landscape, including AI advancements, to identify and deploy best-in-class solutions that maintain a competitive and compliant tax function.

Qualifications
Qualifications:
  • B.A./B.S. in Accounting, Finance, Business, or Computer Sciences.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in tax, finance transformation, or tax technology leadership roles within a publicly traded corporation and/or public accounting firm.
  • Deep expertise in tax processes, including ASC 740, compliance, planning, and global reporting requirements.
  • Proven experience leading large-scale transformation initiatives, including technology implementations and process reengineering.
  • Strong understanding of ERP systems, tax technology platforms, and data architecture.
  • Demonstrated experience driving AI, automation, or digital innovation initiatives within finance or tax functions.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at executive levels.
  • Strategic mindset with a track record of translating vision into measurable outcomes.
  • Ability to lead through complexity, manage competing priorities, and deliver results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to handle multiple concurrent tasks and changing priorities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with both tax and non-tax audiences.
