What is a tax software developer?

Tax software developers are specialized software engineers who design, build, and maintain applications that assist individuals, businesses, and tax professionals with tax preparation and filing. They work on developing user-friendly interfaces, integrating tax law changes, ensuring data security, and automating complex calculations. Their role is crucial in keeping tax software accurate, compliant, and efficient for end users.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tax software developer?

To thrive as a Tax Software Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like Java, C#, or Python), a solid understanding of tax regulations, and a background in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tax preparation software, version control systems like Git, and frameworks such as .NET or Spring Boot is typically required, and certifications in software development or taxation can be advantageous. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and interpreting complex tax requirements. These skills ensure the development of accurate, secure, and user-friendly tax software that complies with evolving legal standards.

What are some common challenges faced by tax software developers when integrating new tax regulations into existing systems?

Tax Software Developers often encounter challenges when adapting systems to comply with frequently changing tax laws and regulations. These updates can be complex, requiring thorough analysis to ensure that all calculations and forms remain accurate and compliant across different jurisdictions. Developers must also collaborate closely with tax experts and QA teams to interpret legal requirements correctly and test for edge cases. Balancing rapid implementation with rigorous testing is crucial to minimize errors that could impact users during tax season.

About the Role

We’re seeking a highly skilled Software Developer with deep expertise in microservices architecture, cloud‑native development, and modern front‑end technologies. This is a hands‑on role where you’ll design and build scalable, high‑performance applications that power our core business systems. You’ll collaborate with cross‑functional teams in a fast‑paced, agile environment to deliver innovative solutions that drive real impact.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Build, maintain, and modernize C#/.NET applications, including ASP.NET Core Web APIs, microservices, and legacy MVC applications.
  • Develop reliable backend services and message‑driven workflows for high‑throughput, distributed systems.
  • Design, tune, and troubleshoot SQL Server workloads, including stored procedures, indexing, execution plans, and concurrency issues.
  • Build and maintain React applications using TypeScript and modern frontend patterns.
  • Build services that run in containerized environments using established Docker and Kubernetes patterns.
  • Integrate applications with Azure services such as Key Vault, Container Registry, and Blob Storage using existing platform standards.
  • Maintain CI/CD pipelines in Azure DevOps to support reliable application delivery.
  • Use observability tooling (for example Grafana) to monitor production behavior and proactively identify issues.
  • Write automated tests across service, integration, and UI layers using tools such as xUnit, Jest, and Playwright.
  • Lead code reviews, mentor engineers, and translate business goals into clear technical solutions.
Must-Have Skills & Experience

Core Development

  • Strong C# and ASP.NET Core Web API experience.
  • Solid object‑oriented design fundamentals and knowledge of common software design patterns.
  • Ability to work effectively across both modern and legacy .NET codebases.
  • Experience designing, building, or supporting distributed backend systems, including microservices, asynchronous workflows, message‑driven integration, and common application architecture patterns.

Database & Data Access

  • Hands‑on experience with stored procedures and execution plan analysis.

Cloud, Infrastructure, and Delivery

  • Experience building applications that run in cloud or containerized environments.
  • Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, or similar deployment platforms.
  • Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and troubleshooting application deployment issues.

Testing, Collaboration, and Process

  • Experience writing automated tests and supporting quality‑focused development practices.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across technical and non‑technical teams.
  • Comfortable in Agile/Scrum environments and standard Git workflows.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in financial services, tax software, or similarly regulated and high‑availability domains.
  • Experience with Azure services such as Key Vault, Container Registry, Blob Storage, or Azure DevOps.
  • Experience deploying or supporting applications in Kubernetes‑based environments.
  • Advanced SQL Server performance tuning experience in high‑volume production systems.
  • Experience with observability and production diagnostics in complex systems.
Education & Certifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field is preferred. Equivalent professional experience will be considered.
