About Us:
Founded in 1975, Salas O'Brien is an employee-owned engineering and professional services firm focused on achieving impact for our clients, our team, and the world. We know that tomorrow's requirements are today's opportunities, and we are here to design lasting solutions for pressing challenges.
We work across a variety of industries providing integrated engineering and consulting services. Our specialized experience includes design for data centers, healthcare, science and technology, high-rise buildings, clean energy, education, and other building types as well as structural and building sciences, infrastructure asset management, advanced robotics, and more.
Our technical expertise is paired with an exceptional team of business development, human resources, finance and accounting, information technology, and marketing professionals, all of whom play a key role in bringing our commitments to life every day.
Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Tax Analyst, Indirect Tax to join our Finance team. Reporting directly to the Tax Director, this remote role will be a key contributor to our U.S. indirect tax function, including tax compliance, research, data analysis, and process improvement.
The Senior Tax Analyst will provide indirect tax expertise across the organization, working closely with Finance, Procurement, and other business teams to ensure compliance with applicable state and local tax requirements. This role will also play an important role in strengthening the Company's indirect tax capabilities by supporting consistent and effective processes, identifying potential tax risks, and providing practical guidance on indirect tax matters.
This role is well suited to a hands-on tax professional with strong analytical skills who can work independently with ERP data, manage multiple indirect tax compliance requirements, research and resolve tax issues, and effectively collaborate with internal teams and external tax advisors.
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following:
  • Prepare, review, and file U.S. indirect tax filings, including sales and use tax, gross receipts tax, excise tax, personal property tax, and other applicable state and local tax filings.
  • Maintain and monitor a comprehensive calendar of indirect tax filing and payment obligations across applicable jurisdictions.
  • Research and analyze the indirect tax treatment of business transactions under applicable U.S. state and local tax laws.
  • Monitor and support state and local tax registration and filing requirements, including evaluating nexus and other factors that may create new indirect tax obligations.
  • Independently run reports and extract, analyze, and reconcile data from Deltek Vantagepoint to the general ledger, trial balances, and tax returns, and investigate variances and data integrity issues as needed.
  • Establish and maintain organized, accurate, and audit-ready documentation and workpapers supporting indirect tax compliance.
  • Manage and support state and local tax audits, including data gathering, documentation preparation, responses to information requests, issue resolution, and coordination with external tax advisors.
  • Monitor, research, and respond to state and local tax notices and correspondence, coordinating with internal teams and external advisors as appropriate.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline and improve indirect tax processes, controls, and compliance procedures.
  • Manage and maintain sales tax exemption and reseller certificates.
  • Support tax due diligence and post-acquisition integration activities, including identifying and analyzing historical and prospective indirect tax exposures and compliance requirements.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Finance, Accounting, Procurement, and other teams across the Company to gather information, resolve tax matters, and support tax-related projects and initiatives.
  • Provide ad hoc analysis and support for technical tax matters, due diligence, and other business initiatives.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax or related field.
  • CPA, MST, or other relevant professional tax qualification is highly desirable.
  • 5+ years of experience in U.S. indirect tax, with strong experience in sales and use tax, property tax, gross receipts tax, and other state and local tax matters.
  • Hands-on experience managing or supporting multi-jurisdictional indirect tax compliance.
  • Prior experience working in a corporate tax department and/or public accounting environment is preferred. Big 4 experience is a plus.
  • Experience in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry or a similar professional services environment is preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with Deltek Vantagepoint, including the ability to independently run reports, extract and analyze transactional data, and reconcile ERP data to the general ledger, trial balances, and tax returns.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting or managing state and local tax audits, including data analysis and preparation of supporting documentation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing business needs.
  • Strong interpersonal and cross-functional collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with Finance, Accounting, and other business teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate tax matters clearly and effectively.
