A tax examiner is responsible for reviewing income tax returns that have been filed by taxpayers to determine whether or not they have been filed correctly. As a tax examiner, your job duties include reviewing deductions and tax credits to ensure they were taken and applied appropriately, answering questions for taxpayers, and verifying the overall accuracy of the return. If you find any errors or the need for corrections, you then report these findings to the appropriate state and federal agencies. Tax examiners may also contact taxpayers directly to inform them of incorrect tax returns and required payments.
