Position Summary:
The Chief Engineer for The Cliffs Hotel and Spa is responsible for the maintenance, upkeep, and safety of all mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing elements of the hotel, in addition to the oversight and care of the physical building and property grounds. The Chief Engineer will oversee the daily operations of the Engineering Department, including addressing and repairing all maintenance issues for the hotel, restaurant, and spa. The Chief Engineer will execute these responsibilities while upholding The Cliffs' Mission and Values and Forbes Standards.
Essential Functions of the job:
  • Participates with General Manager and Owners on planning for capital improvements needed for the property; provides multiple bids, reasoning for the improvement, and coordinates installation and roll out
  • Oversees all renovations execution in partnership with Hotel Quality Assurance Manager, schedules in-house workers and outside contractors if needed, maintains timelines, expresses clear and strategic expectations of project
  • Oversees execution of long-term preventative maintenance and asset protection plans
  • Conduct daily walk-throughs to visually assess the physical structure of the property and identify any related mechanical, electrical, and/or HVAC systems & equipment issues that need to be addressed, taking immediate action as needed
  • Manage, track, assist, and verify completion of all routine maintenance in public spaces, meeting rooms, back of house areas, and outdoor grounds
  • Manage, track, assist, and verify completion of all repairs, replacement, and renovation projects to employee office, break, and work areas
  • Observe and assess progress on current projects, stepping in to help and be "hands on" in order to ensure timely completion
  • Direct and delegate repair requests using in-house communication management tools, tracking and verifying completion
  • Develops and manages Engineering budget
  • Is knowledgeable and aware of all systems on property including but not limited to; Lift Station, Grease Trap, Sewage System, HVAC units, Water System, Sprinklers, Elevators, Fire Panel, Electrical, Pool Equipment
  • Assist in hiring, training, supervising, and disciplining department staff under the direction of the Corporate Director of Engineering and General Manager
  • Create and maintain weekly department schedule, as approved by Corporate Director of Engineering and General Manager
  • Reviews and manages controllable expenses such as heat, light, power, water consumption, tools and equipment, uniforms, vendors and service agreements
  • Ensures that regular on-going communication takes place throughout the engineering operation to communicate daily activities, set expectations, and create awareness of hotel business objectives
  • Communicate clearly and professionally to other management staff and interdepartmentally on a regular basis, regarding ongoing & upcoming projects and issues
  • Communicate progress updates in a professional manner to the Corporate Director of Engineering, General Manager, and other Corporate Partners
  • Regularly provide status updates to Corporate Director of Engineering, and complying with any additional requests made by the Corporate Director of Engineering
  • Follow all safety procedures as directed by the company and by OSHA guidelines and ensure department is in compliance as well
  • Completes all other tasks as assigned by manager

Additional Job Duties:

Education, Experience, Skills:
  • College or Trade Degree preferred
  • Working knowledge of guest services in a luxury hotel setting.
  • Hotel or Resort Engineering, 3 years of experience preferred.
  • Ability to manage a diverse and demanding workload.
  • Ability to multitask and work in mentally demanding situations.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand continuously for the duration of the shift (eight or more hours).
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment (excess of 50 pounds).
  • Be able to stretch, bend, bend and lift frequently up to 40 pounds in weight.
  • Ability to work in stressful situations.
