Client Overview
We are seeking a passionate Freelance Assistant/Associate Women's Cut & Sew Knit/Sweater Designer to support the Design team of a well-known fashion brand based in New York City. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the development of trend-driven women's knitwear and sweater collections from concept through production.
Salary/Hourly Rate
$22/hr - $28/hr
Position Overview
Our client is looking for a creative, trend-driven Freelance Assistant/Associate Women's Cut & Sew Knit/Sweater Designer with experience in cut & sew knits and/or sweaters. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of garment construction, fabric development, fit, and technical design, and is capable of supporting the design process from initial inspiration through production-ready technical packages.
Responsibilities of the Freelance Assistant/Associate Women's Cut & Sew Knit/Sweater Designer:
  • Research global fashion, runway, retail, and consumer trends to develop seasonal design concepts.
  • Design women's cut & sew knit and/or sweater collections that align with brand aesthetic and customer needs.
  • Create mood boards, color palettes, silhouette direction, fabric, stitch, and trim concepts.
  • Develop detailed technical sketches using Adobe Illustrator.
  • Prepare production-ready tech packs, including construction details, measurements, BOMs (Bill of Materials), and sewing instructions.
  • Partner with Product Development, Merchandising, and Sourcing teams throughout the design process.
  • Communicate with overseas factories and vendors during sample development and production.
  • Review prototypes, provide fit comments, and recommend design revisions to achieve the desired fit and aesthetic.
  • Assist in maintaining seasonal design calendars and meeting key development milestones.
Required Experience/Skills for the Freelance Assistant/Associate Women's Cut & Sew Knit/Sweater Designer:
  • 2 - 4 years of experience designing women's cut & sew knits and/or sweaters.
  • Strong knowledge of knit fabrics, yarns, garment construction, fit, fabric development, and finishing techniques.
  • Experience creating production-ready technical packages.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Microsoft Office.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Preferred Experience/Skills for the Freelance Assistant/Associate Women's Cut & Sew Knit/Sweater Designer:
  • Experience developing women's knitwear and sweater collections from concept through production.
  • Understanding of yarn development, stitch techniques, gauge, and sweater construction.
  • Experience collaborating with overseas vendors and factories.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Education Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Fashion Design or a related field is preferred.
