Overview:

Survey Manager is responsible for leading and overseeing all surveying activities for large-scale civil infrastructure projects such as highways, bridges, tunnels, and utility networks. The role combines technical surveying expertise with project management skills to ensure accuracy, compliance, and efficiency across the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead and manage survey teams for one or more projects, coordinating across disciplines like building, highway, bridge, and tunnel construction
• Plan and supervise topographic surveys, layout staking, as-built surveys, and control networks
• Review and interpret design drawings, RFC plans, and technical specifications to ensure accurate field implementation
• Establish and maintain project control points, benchmarks, and survey networks
• Oversee field operations, including task allocation, productivity, and safety compliance
• Operate and maintain survey equipment (Total Stations, GPS, Levels, Trimble systems) and ensure proper calibration
• Coordinate with construction managers, field engineers, and design teams to resolve discrepancies and validate data
• Process and integrate survey data into design platforms like Civil 3D/Terra model/Trimble Business Center (TBC)
• Implement quality control procedures for all survey deliverables
• Prepare and maintain accurate survey documentation and reports for project records and handover
• Mentor and develop junior surveyors and technical staff

Typical Qualifications

• Education: Associate’s degree in surveying, Civil Engineering, Geomatics, or related field or related field experience
• Experience: Preferred 10 years in heavy civil and highway infrastructure projects, with proven survey team management experience
• Licenses: Land Surveying License (RLS, PLS, PE) preferred
• Technical Skills: Proficiency in survey data management, TBC, Civil 3D, Bentley, as well as the technical knowledge base to understanding heavy civil construction sequences, schedules, and priorities.
• Equipment: Hands-on experience with Trimble systems, GPS RTK, total stations, levels, and any other modern equipment being implemented. Our teams often rely on Survey Management to be on the front end of knowledge related to new hardware or new equipment that has become available in the market particularly as it relates to Machine Control and As-built Scanning.
• Soft Skills: Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and ability to work full-time on-site with a dynamic team.

Work Context

This role is typically onsite based for the duration of the project, often in large-scale roadway or infrastructure projects. The Survey Manager ensures that surveying work supports the overall construction schedule, quality standards, and safety requirements, while maintaining compliance with contractual and design specifications.
