How much do surface mount soldering jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 16, 2026, the average hourly pay for surface mount soldering in the United States is $19.56, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.59 and $21.63 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is surface mount soldering?

Surface mount soldering is a process used in electronics manufacturing to attach components directly onto the surface of printed circuit boards (PCBs). Unlike traditional through-hole soldering, which requires inserting component leads into drilled holes, surface mount soldering uses small pads on the PCB to hold components in place. This method allows for more compact circuit designs, higher component density, and automated assembly, making it ideal for modern electronics production.

What are some common challenges faced in a Surface Mount Soldering role, and how can they be overcome?

Surface Mount Soldering technicians often encounter challenges such as working with extremely small components, ensuring precise placement, and avoiding soldering defects like bridging or cold joints. Overcoming these hurdles requires steady hands, attention to detail, and familiarity with specialized equipment such as microscopes and reflow ovens. Continuous practice, adherence to safety protocols, and ongoing training in the latest soldering techniques can help technicians maintain high quality and meet production standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Surface Mount Soldering Technician, and why are they important?

To excel as a Surface Mount Soldering Technician, you need precision hand-eye coordination, knowledge of electronic components, and experience in soldering techniques, often supported by IPC certification or equivalent training. Familiarity with soldering stations, reflow ovens, microscopes, and automated placement systems is crucial. Attention to detail, patience, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team help set top performers apart. These skills ensure the production of reliable, high-quality electronic assemblies that meet industry standards and minimize defects.
