About the Role
Assistant Editors play a critical role in ensuring a seamless, efficient, and high-quality peer review process through proactive pipeline management and strong editorial support. Leveraging interpersonal awareness, collaboration, action-oriented problem-solving, and resourcefulness, they identify potential challenges, make sound decisions, and work closely with journal Editors to ensure peer review is conducted efficiently while upholding the highest standards of quality, integrity, and author experience.
Assistant Editors collaborate with Editors and internal stakeholders to uphold journal brands and reputations by ensuring adherence to editorial policies, publishing standards, and compliance requirements throughout the publication lifecycle. Through expertise in publishing workflows and systems, editorial practices, and manuscript assessment, they support the successful progression of manuscripts from submission through final decision.
This is a hybrid role based in New York. This location supports effective collaboration with the team and aligns business needs.
Role Responsibilities
  • Partner with Editors to ensure Authors receive exceptional support and guidance throughout the publication process, utilizing strong interpersonal awareness and customer-focused communication skills.
  • Manage journal pipelines and editorial workflows, overseeing manuscripts from submission through final decision while maintaining accuracy, efficiency, and compliance.
  • Conduct manuscript assessments to review submissions for completeness, policy adherence, and workflow readiness.
  • Support Editors throughout the peer review process, building strong working relationships through effective collaboration and communication.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for Authors, fostering trust and enhancing author satisfaction through timely, professional, and clear correspondence.
  • Collaborate with Journal Editorial Staff, Publishing Operations, and Production teams to support continuous improvement initiatives and operational excellence.
  • Handle communications among Authors, Reviewers, Editors, Guest Editors, Readers, and other stakeholders involved in the publication process.
  • Apply strong writing and editorial skills to draft, edit, and manage professional communications while maintaining a high standard of quality.
  • Utilize sound decision-making, analytical thinking, and logical reasoning to prioritize tasks, resolve workflow challenges, and support efficient manuscript progression.
  • Identify opportunities for process optimization by recommending and implementing improvements that reduce turnaround times and enhance workflow effectiveness.
  • Demonstrate resourcefulness in addressing complex publishing challenges and identifying practical solutions that support editorial objectives.
  • Mentor and support new team members, sharing best practices and fostering a collaborative team environment.
  • Remain flexible and responsive to changing priorities, new initiatives, and evolving journal requirements through adaptability and a continuous improvement mindset.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications
