General Description of Position
Under the general supervision and direction of the Division Dean/Associate Dean and the Program Director/Lead of the Nondestructive Testing Technology Program, the Adjunct Instructor is responsible for providing regular instruction, developing and updating the courses taught in a classroom/laboratory, Internet, and or distance learning environment. This is a part-time temporary position.
Essential Functions
- Provide Student Instruction in program courses as assigned
- Provide instruction to a diverse student population in the Nondestructive Testing Technology Program focusing on, but not limited to Visual Inspection Methods, Manufacturing Processes, Blue Print Reading & CAD, NDT Methods, and Metallurgy to meet the needs and requirement of specific courses being developed or taught.
- Prepare necessary written instructional materials including lesson plans, instruction sheets, teaching aids, and tests that will promote maximum learning for the students.
- Determine the appropriate material to be covered in the courses assigned to teach (subject to program chair and division approval).
- Operate and utilize as part of the teaching process appropriate audio-visual and multimedia equipment and software.
- Create visual communication presentations such as, but not limited to power-point, Prezi, or other visual graphics software, use of interactive LCD projector, develop instructional aids on the computer, compile a library of training films on demand, DVD's and videos to supplement instructional techniques that reflect accurate and up-to-date methods used in the Nondestructive Testing Technology industry.
- Share responsibility for developing new courses and update existing courses as required to keep the Nondestructive Testing Technology program current with industry standards and processes. New course development includes writing course objectives, developing syllabi, developing handouts and tests and researching textbooks and on-line resources and data for course use. Ensure that each course is current with industry standards based on input by advisory team or knowledge gained from the program DACUM.
- Maintain and Upgrade Nondestructive Testing Technology Classroom/Laboratory Instructional Facilities, Instruments and Equipment
- Share responsibility for the maintenance of all instructional facilities, equipment, and program classrooms to insure that they are maintained in a safe and proper working order for student use.
- Complete and Maintain Program and Students Records
- Maintain Technical Competency in Teaching Area
- Attend seminars, professional association meetings, conferences and educational workshops or other related training sessions to continually engage in self-study to stay technically competent. Participate in college activities related to professional development, diversity and safety.
- Participate in Area Campus - Based Program Activities and Teams
- Attend, participate and support any program activities (i.e. advisory team meetings, division meetings, etc.) and College activities and teams as requested.
- Act as a Technical Advisor for Students in the Nondestructive Testing Technology Program
- Advise the Nondestructive Testing Technology program students on academic standing, support and explain College policies and procedures with students to complete all records and forms etc. as necessary for proper articulation and program operation. Other tasks included in this area: assist students in selecting and registering for courses; advise students on their academic progress, courses needed for graduation, and generally serve as the first line of communication between students and the College staff.
- Faculty are required to complete annual trainings and professional development activities as outlined by the College.
- Successfully complete an extensive background check process in order to show trustworthiness and reliability for restricted areas.
- The instructor may have additional duties and responsibilities of supervising and coordinating the activities of the program and its faculty if assigned to be Program Director/Department Chair. The primary role of the Program Director/Department Chair is to ensure that through personal and faculty efforts, students are able to achieve the objectives of the program. The Program Director reports to the Dean or Associate Dean of the Division.
- Promote and support the College's diversity goals; promote/support Access, Fair Employment, EEO, Equity and Diversity programs.
- Promote and support the College's organizational environment goals. Maximize operational efficiency by enhancing policies and procedures, staffing, and communication processes and practices. Marginal Functions
- Serve as a technical advisor for the Nondestructive Testing Technology program and provide instructional assistance to other College divisions and programs as requested to ensure quality education for students and that College policies and procedures are followed.
- Teach evening Continuing Education or off-campus Nondestructive Testing Technology classes or customized training classes.
- Perform other related duties within division/program as assigned.
- May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions/programs/areas as required.
- Perform other College functions and duties as assigned.
- Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Possess specific knowledge and experience in the Nondestructive Testing Technology field. This will include the following, focusing on, but not limited to; Visual Inspection Methods, Manufacturing Processes, Blue Print Reading & CAD, NDT Methods, and Metallurgy.
- Possess ability and experience in the operation and maintenance of NDT test equipment (x-ray, gamma ray sources, ultrasonic equipment, eddy current equipment, liquid penetrant and magnetic particle testing equipment). Also included are calibration standards and related equipment.
- Possess current knowledge of and understand applicable codes, standards, and specifications (AWS, ASME, API, MIL-STD's etc.) related to NDT as well as various forms of manufacturing and fabrication.
- Possess Level II & AWS (CWI) Welding Inspector certifications or be able to obtain certifications within two years of employment.
- Be able to maintain classroom/laboratory environment that is conducive to learning including the ability to maintain proper order.
- Be able to interact with colleagues, staff, students, and supervisors in a positive and cooperative manner.
- Demonstrate effective oral and written communication competencies necessary to conduct classroom and laboratory instruction in working with a diverse student population.
- Ability to devise and utilize appropriate evaluation methods for classroom, laboratory, Internet, and/or distance learning use.
- Ability to evaluate lab activities completed by students as objectively as possible.
- Prepare tests and quizzes that are pertinent to the demonstration delivered.
- Ability to organize and present course material in a logical and timely manner using effective communication skills and to prepare and provide this information for various classroom formats.
- Ensure course materials are current and relevant by researching and remaining up to date on current NDT practices.
- Participate in the development and implementation of College recruiting activities designed to attract students to a Nondestructive Testing Technology career.
- Participate as a cooperative team member of the Nondestructive Testing Technology faculty, working together to strengthen the program, respond to needs of industry for preparation of student workers and to demonstrate the need for students to develop a positive work ethic for successful employment.
- Knowledge of and skills in using PC computers working with word processing, spreadsheets and AutoCAD.
- The individual must possess the above skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
Minimum Qualifications
- An Associate Degree in Nondestructive Testing Technology.
- Two (2) years' current work experience in the field of nondestructive testing.
- Possess Level II & AWS (CWI) Welding Inspector certifications must be obtained within two years of employment.
Desired Qualifications
- Advanced degree or additional college training related to Nondestructive Testing teaching and instruction.
- Five years of teaching experience at the Post-Secondary level.
- Teaching experience in online, hybrid format, flipped classroom and progressive experience in utilizing technology in curriculum development and delivery.
