Department Summary

Student Accounting is deeply committed to delivering the highest quality of innovative student account and financial services to the UNT community, helping ensure UNT's enrollment and financial success. Our team is responsible for assessing and collecting all tuition and fees, processing waivers, exemptions, veterans' educational benefits, third-party sponsorships, tuition benefit programs, refunds, departmental deposit and financial services, and tax reporting.

Position Overview

This position serves as part of the Veterans (VA) Benefits team within Student Accounting, and functions as a VA School Certifying Official with responsibilities for reviewing federal and state veterans benefits applications, determining eligibility for VA benefits, certifying enrollment, tuition/fees, and other student financial records to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the Texas Veterans Commission, or external VA sponsors on behalf of UNT. This position functions within a highly audited, federal and state benefits program which certifies enrollment, tuition/fees, and benefits for over 3,600 students annually, representing an annual financial impact of over 25M.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field with two years of experience in accounting, billing/receivable or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Previous experience working as a School Certifying Official for federal or state veterans educational benefits. Familiarity with federal and state laws governing the privacy of student records, accounting transactions, and federal/state aid programs. Ability to quickly grasp detailed rules and regulations and apply them accurately to specific situations. A successful individual will have experience within a student accounting, bursar, or other financial area with a focus on working with student accounts receivable information, financial transactions/processes, or waiver/exemption programs.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience coordinating federal or state veterans educational benefits. Familiarity with federal and state laws governing the privacy of student records, accounting transactions, and federal/state aid programs. Ability to quickly grasp detailed rules and regulations and apply them accurately to specific situations. A successful individual will have experience within a student accounting, bursar, or other financial area with a focus on working with student accounts receivable information, financial transactions/processes, or waiver/exemption programs.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

Job Duties

  • Prepares enrollment certifications for veteran/dependent students to use VA education benefits. -
  • Processes VA Tuition/Fee/Enrollment reports on a recurring basis and analyzes impacts relating to student changes in enrollment and tuition/fees.ย 
  • Serves as the primary UNT administrator responsible for the Hazlewood Exemption (state veterans benefits program), managing a portfolio of over 1,600 students and families (ex: Hazlewood Legacy) totaling over 15M annually. Administers a multifaceted exemption program in compliance with Texas Education Code, state guidelines, and institutional accounting policies.ย 
  • Leads the preparation and certification for all reporting for the Hazlewood Exemption to the Texas Veterans Commission, Legislative Budget Board, Hazlewood Reimbursement Reporting in USAS, and other reports required by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB). -ย 
  • Utilize technology to ensure efficient and compliant processes and controls exist for collecting, approving, and maintaining the integrity of veterans educational records received as part of the Hazlewood Exemption program.ย 
  • Conducts education and orientation sessions for current/prospective students (freshman, transfer) as well as campus partners on the use of veterans education benefits.ย 
  • Serves as a student benefits advisor within Student Veteran Services. Assists students via in person appointment, walk-in, telephone, and email/case resolution regarding veterans benefits.ย 
  • Collaborates with other teams within Student Accounting as well as the Financial Aid and Scholarships office on types of tuition/fees, financial aid, scholarships, and other credits to ensure they are properly accounted for according to rules and guidelines related to state exemption programs and VA education benefits.ย 
  • Coordinates implementation and review of financial and other processes utilized to audit and test financial controls surrounding the Hazlewood Exemption program. Collaborates with other teams in Student Accounting to support audits of program records on a recurring basis.ย 
  • Promotes a positive work environment for all team members. Demonstrates respect, flexibility, open-mindedness, and kindness in all interactions with students, team members, and campus partners. Demonstrates a commitment to the mission and vision of Student Accounting, the Division of Enrollment, and the University of North Texas. Serves as an example of positive engagement in the department through active participation in meetings, within committees, and by assisting others.ย
