Structural Engineer Internship information

What is a structural engineer internship?

A Structural Engineer Internship is a temporary position for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in structural engineering. Interns assist with designing, analyzing, and inspecting buildings, bridges, and other structures under the supervision of experienced engineers. They may use software tools like AutoCAD, Revit, or SAP2000 to create models and perform calculations. The internship helps develop technical skills, industry knowledge, and practical problem-solving abilities. It also provides networking opportunities and potential career pathways in structural engineering.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on as a structural engineer intern?

As a Structural Engineer Intern, you can expect to contribute to a variety of tasks, such as drafting design drawings, performing structural calculations, assisting with site inspections, and helping review project plans for compliance with safety standards. You'll work closely with experienced engineers and project managers, gaining hands-on experience in both office and sometimes field settings. This role is designed to help you develop practical skills while learning how structural engineering concepts are applied in real-world projects. Interns often have opportunities to participate in team meetings, interact with other disciplines, and receive mentorship to support their professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the structural engineer internship position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer Intern, you need a solid background in civil or structural engineering principles, typically gained through coursework in an accredited engineering program. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, or SAP2000, along with basic knowledge of building codes and standards, is often expected. Effective communication, problem-solving abilities, and a willingness to learn from experienced engineers are valuable soft skills for excelling in this position. These abilities ensure accuracy in technical work, facilitate productive team collaboration, and support the intern’s growth into a competent engineering professional.

Is there a demand for structural engineer interns?

There is consistent demand for structural engineer interns as construction and infrastructure projects grow, and firms seek interns to support engineering design, analysis, and project planning. Internships provide valuable experience with CAD software and structural analysis tools, making them a common entry point for aspiring structural engineers. The demand varies by region and industry activity levels but generally remains steady in the engineering field.

What do structural engineer interns do?

Structural engineer interns assist in analyzing building designs, preparing drawings, and conducting site inspections under the supervision of licensed engineers. They gain experience with design software like AutoCAD and learn about safety standards, construction processes, and structural analysis. Internships typically involve supporting project teams and developing technical skills relevant to structural engineering.

This position will support our Federal Programs AEC Team on structural engineering projects for federal, defense, and public-sector clients. The role is a good fit for a junior engineer with 1 to 3 years of experience who wants broad technical exposure, direct mentorship, and increasing responsibility contributing to real projects from design through construction-phase support.
Our Federal Programs Team is comprised of highly motivated engineers, architects and interior designers with a variety of technical backgrounds working in several key locations across the US and internationally. Major clients are U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Postal Service, and U.S. National Park Service. Why Join Our Structural Team
Our structural team supports federal, defense, and public-sector clients on practical, technically meaningful facilities. The work is mission-focused, technically varied, and grounded in real operational needs, with constraints related to security, budgets, schedule, constructability, and multidisciplinary coordination.
For a junior engineer, this role offers continued development in structural design, renovations, foundations, equipment support, seismic design, and other specialized project requirements while gaining additional responsibility through mentorship and hands-on project delivery.
Your Impact
  • Perform structural analysis and design of new and existing buildings under the supervision of experienced engineers, including gravity and lateral systems, foundations, and structural components constructed of steel, concrete, masonry, and wood.
  • Develop structural drawings, specifications, calculations, and design documentation using site observations, existing-condition information, geotechnical reports, and other project data.
  • Perform engineering calculations and use structural analysis and design software to evaluate building loads and design structural members and connections in accordance with applicable building codes, design standards, and project criteria.
  • Develop structural design concepts, select appropriate structural systems and materials, and coordinate structural requirements with architectural, civil, geotechnical, mechanical, electrical, and fire protection disciplines.
  • Prepare complete, accurate, and concise structural calculations, design drawings, specifications, reports, and building information models using applicable engineering and drafting software.
  • Participate in site visits and construction-phase services, including documenting existing conditions and construction progress, reviewing submittals, and assisting with responses to requests for information, while complying with applicable safety requirements and site-specific procedures.
  • Complete required company, safety, and project-specific training.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are
Required Qualifications

  • 1 to 3 years of relevant post education experience
  • Excellent research skills with analytical mindset.
  • Familiarity with structural building codes and design standards.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
  • Familiarity with structural design and modeling software such as ETABS, SAP2000, RISA-3D, RAM Concept, SAFE, Revit, and AutoCAD.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
  • The selected candidate must have the ability to work in the United States immediately.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Engineer-in-Training certification, or ability to obtain within a reasonable period after hire.
  • Prior internship related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.
