JOB PURPOSE
The Director of Development leads and owns the organization's fundraising strategy, revenue growth, and donor experience. This role is responsible for generating new donor revenue, managing the development department, and building a consistent and high-performing fundraising pipeline. This position requires strong relationship building, disciplined execution, storytelling, and financial understanding. The Director of Development works at the intersection of development, marketing, and finance to ensure alignment and long-term sustainability.
ORGANIZATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
As a mission driven nonprofit organization, all employees are required to contribute to organization wide initiatives that support community impact. This includes participation in up to six Pop Up and Give community events annually. These occur outside of standard business hours and are scheduled on the third Saturday of the month.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Revenue Generation and New Donor Strategy

  • Own and achieve the organization's total annual development revenue goal across all funding streams
  • Accountable for new donor acquisition, existing donor retention and growth, major gifts, corporate partnerships, and event revenue
  • Work in close partnership with the CEO and Director of Special Projects to drive overall revenue strategy and execution
  • Set and track individual revenue targets by stream including new donors, existing donors, major gifts, corporate sponsorships, and events
  • Maintain consistent activity across outreach, meetings, tours, and asks to move prospects through the pipeline
  • Report pipeline performance, conversion rates, and year-over-year revenue growth to the CEO on a regular basis

Systems, Reporting, and Revenue Classification

  • Establish and maintain clear revenue classification across all funding streams including new donor revenue, existing donor revenue, grants, corporate sponsorships, events, and major gifts
  • Ensure all revenue is accurately tracked within CRM
  • Maintain visibility into year-over-year performance across each revenue category to support strategic decision making
  • Collaborate with finance and leadership to ensure alignment in reporting and financial accuracy
  • Build systems that prioritize clarity, accountability, and team alignment

Donor and Partnership Management

  • Build and steward relationships with donors, prospects, community partners, and sponsors
  • Develop and manage a consistent donor pipeline from prospect to engagement to gift and retention
  • Conduct outreach, schedule meetings, and lead tours to convert new and existing donor opportunities
  • Utilize the organization's volunteer base, donor database, and community relationships to drive revenue growth
  • Maintain accurate donor records, notes, and follow-up tasks in CRM
  • Develop and execute a major gifts strategy including identification, cultivation, and stewardship of high-capacity donors

Event and Project Management

  • Own backend planning, management, and execution of all fundraising events, ensuring alignment with organizational revenue goals and standards
  • Drive event performance with a focus on generating both new and existing donor revenue beyond event-based contributions
  • Develop and execute sponsorship strategies including identification, cultivation, and stewardship
  • Manage all operational aspects of the event lifecycle including planning, budgeting, logistics, and post-event reporting
  • Partner with the Director of Special Projects who supports vision development and revenue generation through relationship building and sales
  • Ensure events align with the broader development strategy and support long-term donor growth

Communications, Collaboration, and Documentation

  • Act as a liaison between the CEO, finance, marketing, volunteer, and operations teams
  • Ensure alignment across departments to support fundraising goals
  • Partner closely with marketing to align storytelling and donor engagement strategies
  • Support communication and workflow tracking across teams
  • Draft donor communications including outreach, acknowledgments, and proposals
  • Support development of fundraising materials and campaign messaging
  • Maintain organized digital files, templates, and development documentation
  • Ensure consistency and follow-through across all donor communications
  • Performs other related duties consistent with the scope and purpose of the position

  • CRM Proficiency: Advanced proficiency with CRM systems to manage donor records, pipeline activity, and reporting
  • Technology: Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Nonprofit Management, Business Administration, Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 7+ years of experience in nonprofit development, fundraising, donor stewardship, or partnership management
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and generate revenue
  • Demonstrated experience managing a full development portfolio including major gifts, corporate partnerships, and fundraising events
  • Demonstrated ability to secure individual gifts of $25,000 or more
  • Experience working directly with a CEO or executive leadership on revenue strategy
  • Experience working cross-functionally with marketing and finance teams
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) certification
WORK SCHEDULE AND CLASSIFICATION
  • This position is scheduled to work approximately 40 hours per week.
  • Evening, weekend, event based, or on call work may be required depending on operational needs.
  • This position is classified as Exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act based on Administrative duties.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires travel to perform essential job duties, the employee must maintain a valid driver's license and meet the organization's insurability requirements. Reliable transportation is required to fulfill travel related responsibilities.
