What is a stranding operator?

Stranding Operators are skilled workers who operate machinery used to twist together multiple wires or fibers to form cables or conductors, typically for use in electrical, telecommunications, or manufacturing industries. Their duties include setting up, monitoring, and maintaining stranding machines, as well as ensuring the quality and consistency of the finished cables. They also perform routine checks, troubleshoot issues, and follow safety protocols to prevent accidents. Stranding Operators play a crucial role in the cable production process, ensuring products meet industry standards and specifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a stranding operator?

To thrive as a Stranding Operator, you need a solid understanding of wire or cable manufacturing processes, mechanical aptitude, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with stranding machines, measurement tools, and basic computer systems for monitoring production is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and strong teamwork are valuable soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure consistent product quality, minimize production downtime, and maintain safe, efficient operations.

What are the main challenges faced by stranding operators in maintaining production efficiency?

Stranding Operators often encounter challenges such as managing machine downtime, ensuring product quality, and meeting strict production schedules. They must closely monitor equipment for signs of wear or malfunction and make quick adjustments to avoid delays. Additionally, maintaining clear communication with maintenance teams and quality control personnel is essential to promptly resolve issues and keep the production line running smoothly. Staying organized and proactive is key to overcoming these challenges and achieving consistent output.

Client Overview

This opportunity sits within a large, publicly traded global materials science and technology company with a multi decade history in North Carolina and a reputation as a pioneer in optical fiber and cable technology. The company operates several cable manufacturing sites across Catawba County as part of a broader push to expand domestic broadband and connectivity infrastructure. This facility is a modern, high volume production site within that network, giving the right candidate exposure to advanced process engineering work at meaningful scale, with the stability and resources of an established industry leader behind it.

Top 3 Skills

  • Process qualification and validation experience in cable, wire, or continuous polymer extrusion manufacturing
  • Statistical process analysis, including capability studies, control charts, and designed experiments
  • Root cause analysis and troubleshooting in high volume manufacturing environments

What You'll Do

  • Support and optimize manufacturing processes across cable production steps such as buffering, stranding, jacketing, armoring, and final processing
  • Define and maintain process windows, operating specifications, and reaction plans for critical steps
  • Lead or support qualification of new processes, equipment, tooling, and materials, including test plans and final reports
  • Analyze manufacturing and quality data to identify trends, variation drivers, and improvement opportunities
  • Run designed experiments and structured studies to determine critical process parameters
  • Investigate deviations, defects, and yield losses, and lead root cause investigations
  • Implement corrective actions to reduce scrap, startup loss, and defect rates
  • Maintain engineering documentation including work instructions, control plans, and qualification records
  • Support change control and determine requalification needs for process or material changes
  • Collaborate across engineering, quality, materials, and operations teams, and mentor junior staff

What We Need From You

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Materials, Manufacturing, or a related engineering field
  • 5+ years of process or manufacturing engineering experience in cable, wire, or continuous extrusion manufacturing
  • Demonstrated experience leading process qualification or characterization work
  • Strong statistical analysis skills applied to process development and control
  • Strong technical writing ability for protocols, specifications, and controlled documentation

Preferred / Bonus

  • Master's or doctorate in engineering, materials science, or data analytics
  • Direct experience with ribbon manufacturing, SZ stranding, jacketing extrusion, or high fiber count cable production
