A role in Engineering within Store Design offers the opportunity to apply your technical expertise to complex building systems that directly impact the safety, reliability, sustainability, and long-term performance of Target's facilities. Working alongside cross-functional partners and industry experts, you'll help establish engineering standards, influence enterprise design strategies, and deliver solutions that support Target's continued growth.


As a Lead Structural Engineer, you will serve as an enterprise technical expert responsible for the strategy, design, development, evaluation, and implementation of structural systems across Target's Retail Stores, Supply Chain facilities, and Headquarters locations.

You will establish enterprise structural design standards while providing technical leadership for new construction, remodels, structural assessments, asset lifecycle programs, and building resiliency initiatives. Working with internal partners and external engineering consultants, you will ensure structural systems support Target's safety, operational, and long-term facility performance objectives.

You will evaluate emerging technologies, influence enterprise structural engineering strategies, mentor engineers, and advance engineering best practices across Target's building portfolio.

About you:

  • Four-year degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Structural Engineering from an Accreditation Board for Engineering & Technology (ABET) accredited program.

  • 7+ years of structural engineering experience with a consulting engineering firm, design-build contractor, structural specialty contractor, or owner organization supporting commercial, retail, industrial, or logistics facilities.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required; Structural Engineer (SE) license preferred where applicable or ability to obtain additional licensure as required.

  • Proficient in the structural design and evaluation of steel, concrete, masonry, and wood building systems, including foundations and lateral force resisting systems.

  • Experience evaluating existing structures, supporting renovations and tenant improvements, and developing practical solutions for occupied facilities.

  • Knowledge of commercial building structural systems, construction methods, and structural rehabilitation techniques.

  • Working knowledge of applicable building codes and standards including the International Building Code (IBC), ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC Steel Construction Manual, TMS Masonry Code, and other applicable structural design standards.

  • Experience coordinating with geotechnical engineers and integrating geotechnical recommendations into foundation design and site development.

  • Ability to review structural calculations, construction documents, shop drawings, deferred submittals, and field modifications for technical accuracy and compliance.

  • Ability to use CAD and Building Information Modeling (BIM) software, including Autodesk Revit, in the development and review of construction documents.

  • Familiarity with structural analysis and design software such as RAM Structural System, RISA-3D, ETABS, SAP2000, STAAD Pro, or equivalent engineering applications.

  • Practical knowledge of structural materials, building envelope interfaces, and commercial construction practices.

  • Strong understanding of project delivery methods, consultant management, and construction administration.

  • Ability to negotiate effectively to achieve agreements that all parties can support.

  • Ability to synthesize complex technical information from a variety of sources and apply sound engineering judgment to make informed decisions.

  • Ability and desire to seek out technical training opportunities to increase skills and remain current with evolving industry standards and emerging technologies.

  • Ability to champion ideas with confidence while driving practical, innovative solutions to complex engineering challenges.

  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, influence engineering decisions, and ensure that diverse technical perspectives are considered throughout project development.

  • Ability to travel up to 25%.


This position will operate as a Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement based on Target's needs. A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team member's core role will need to be performed both onsite at the Target HQ MN location the role is assigned to and virtually, depending upon what your role, team and tasks require for that day.
