To thrive in Store Design, you need expertise in spatial planning, visual merchandising, and interior design, often supported by a degree in design or architecture. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite, along with knowledge of building codes and materials, is typically required. Strong creativity, attention to detail, and collaboration skills help designers create engaging and brand-consistent retail environments. These skills are crucial for delivering functional, aesthetically pleasing stores that enhance customer experience and drive sales.

Store Design professionals work closely with various departments such as merchandising, marketing, operations, and real estate throughout the planning and execution of a new retail location. Regular meetings and collaborative design sessions help align the store’s visual identity with brand standards and business objectives, making teamwork a vital part of the role.

What is store design?

Store design refers to the process of planning and creating the layout, aesthetics, and overall environment of a retail space to enhance the customer experience and maximize sales. This involves choosing fixtures, lighting, color schemes, signage, and traffic flow patterns that reflect the brand identity and encourage shoppers to explore and purchase products. Effective store design considers both functional needs and visual appeal, ensuring the space is inviting, accessible, and efficient for both customers and staff.

Job description

Project Manager- Store Design
Department: Multibrand/Hybrid/Franchise
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Los Angeles HQ
Reporting To: Mash Armstrong
Compensation: $110,000 - $130,000 / year
Description
SKIMS is a solutions-oriented brand creating the next generation of underwear, loungewear, shapewear, and essentials. We are setting new standards by delivering technically innovative, comfort-driven products with elevated design for everybody.
At the intersection of culture, innovation, and commerce, SKIMS is a global brand redefining modern apparel. Our teams are built on creativity, collaboration, and operational excellence, and we are committed to fostering an inclusive, high-performance environment where ambitious, curious, and values-driven individuals can do the best work of their careers.
As we continue to scale globally, our HQ teams play a critical role in shaping strategy, building world-class infrastructure, and driving sustainable growth across markets.
SKIMS is looking for a detail-driven, visually sharp Project Manager focused on Design to join our New Store Development team. This role sits at the intersection of creative vision and technical execution - supporting the design and delivery of SKIMS retail environments including flagship stores, pop-ups, experiential activations, and office spaces.
You will serve as the connective tissue between our design architect, cross-functional partners, and vendors, ensuring every project reflects the SKIMS aesthetic from early concept through to doors open. You bring a genuine design eye, designdocumentation experience, and the organizational discipline to keep multiple complex projects moving in parallel.
This is a role for someone who understands that every detail matters - and that the difference between a good space and a great one lives in the execution.
Key Responsibilities
Design Development & Creative Execution
  • Support the development of store layouts, spatial planning, and design concepts across retail and special projects.
  • Translate creative direction into renderings, presentations, and build-ready drawing packages.
  • Contribute to the evolution and consistency of SKIMS retail design standards across all markets.
  • Review drawings, fixtures, and material selections for alignment with brand vision and aesthetic.
  • Maintain design libraries, fixture standards, and visual references.
  • Maintain inventory of in-store graphic display and coordinate with the marketing team for initial installation.
  • Review submittals and shop drawings for design conformance.
  • Coordinate and transfer materials for prospective locations.
  • Support QA/QC of design development documentation throughout all project phases.
  • Assist in preparing materials for weekly global design reviews.
  • Develop design detail solutions tailored to individual project conditions.
  • Support onboarding of design architects and ensure alignment on SKIMS standards from day one.

Pop-Ups, Activations, Franchise & Multi-Brand
  • Support the concepting and rollout of pop-ups and special activations across key markets.
  • Translate creative proposals, mood boards, and presentations into technical drawings for fabrication partners.
  • Coordinate with internal teams to ensure seamless execution of brand moments and experiences.
  • Manage franchise partner design reviews, ensuring partners have the correct design details and sample materials to execute successfully.
  • Work closely with fabrication partners to review shop drawings, approve sample materials, and maintain project schedules.

Project Coordination
  • Support the management of multiple projects simultaneously from concept through completion.
  • Track milestones, timelines, and key deliverables - flagging risks before they become blockers.
  • Coordinate with external partners including designers, fabricators, and vendors for special projects.
  • Maintain day-to-day communication cadence to ensure projects progress on time and on budget.

Budget + Documentation Admin Support
  • Assist with providing necessary information to legal, accounting cross functional partners at project startup.
  • Assist in tracking project budgets, cost tracking sheets, and vendor invoicing across active projects.
  • Organize and manage project files, ensuring all documentation is current, accessible, and audit-ready.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to ensure accurate cost coding and budget alignment from concept through closeout.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Interior Design, or a related field.
  • 4+ years of experience in retail design, store development, or experiential environments.
  • Strong visual sensibility and deep understanding of spatial design principles.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, SketchUp (or similar 3D tools), and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Project for scheduling, milestone tracking, and project reporting.
  • Experience producing layouts, renderings, and polished presentation materials.
  • Highly organized, with the ability to manage multiple active projects in a fast-paced environment without dropping the detail.
  • Strong communicator - clear, concise, and proactive with both internal teams and external partners.
  • Genuine passion for fashion, retail, and the art of creating elevated brand experiences.

YOU MIGHT ALSO HAVE
  • Experience supporting pop-ups, activations, or experiential retail environments.
  • Interest in emerging retail concepts and innovative customer experiences.
  • Strong understanding of retail construction documentation, with experience producing full drawing sets.
  • Background on the architect of record side of retail design and development.
  • A sharp eye for design, proportion, and materiality - and the ability to articulate why it matters.
  • A proactive, adaptable, solutions-first mindset. You don't wait to be told - you bring the answer with the problem.
