Heavy Equipment Truck Driver
SMS Mill Services, LLC is a leader in the steel mill services industry prioritizing recycling and environmental/worker' safety and handling all operations with integrity. SMS Jackson is seeking aย highly skilled, SAFETY FOCUSED and dependableย Heavy Equipment Truck Driver. This role is responsible for operating on-site haul trucks and other heavy mobile equipment to transport scrap metal, raw materials, and production materials throughout the facility safely and efficiently.
The ideal candidate has experience driving heavy industrial trucks, understands active yard environments, and can work safely around loaders, cranes, rail cars, and other equipment.
SMS provides a comprehensive range of services for steel mill customers.ย  We partner with our customers to design custom, cost-effective solutions, which focus on adding value and achieving goals for the operation and the environment. Our range of services includes, but is not limited scrap yard management, finished or semi-finished product services, melt shop services, logistics/transportation support, and slag processing.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate haul trucks, dump trucks, roll-off trucks, water trucks, or other heavy industrial vehicles on-site
  • Transport scrap metal, slag, raw materials, and other loads between designated plant or yard locations
  • Perform pre-shift inspections and complete daily equipment checklists
  • Safely load, haul, dump, and maneuver equipment in congested industrial areas
  • Maintain awareness of pedestrians, heavy equipment, rail traffic, and changing site conditions
  • Communicate with dispatch, supervisors, scale house, and equipment operators regarding material movement needs
  • Follow designated traffic routes, speed limits, and site rules
  • Report mechanical issues, unsafe conditions, or incidents immediately
  • Assist with general yard work or equipment support tasks when needed

Safety Responsibilities
  • Follow all company safety policies, PPE requirements, and site rules
  • Maintain awareness of pedestrians, truck traffic, rail activity, and surrounding equipment
  • Operate equipment responsibly in tight spaces and active industrial areas
  • Participate in safety meetings and training programs

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Previous heavy equipment operating experience required
  • Experience in scrap recycling, steel mill, demolition, construction, or industrial settings preferred
  • Ability to operate multiple types of equipment is a plus
  • Strong hand-eye coordination and awareness of surroundings
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality required
Physical / Work Conditions
  • Ability to work in an industrial steel mill scrap yard environment
  • Exposure to noise, weather changes, dust, and moving equipment
  • Ability to climb equipment ladders, sit for extended periods, and perform physical tasks as needed
