Job description

Chamberlain Group (CG) is a global leader in intelligent access and Blackstone portfolio company. Powered by our myQ technology, we make access simple and secure for millions of homeowners, businesses, and communities worldwide. Our flagship brands, LiftMaster and Chamberlain, are found in 51+ million homes, and 14 million+ people rely on the myQ app daily.

This position is responsible for the senior technical leadership and day-to-day management of multiple front end software engineering teams supporting the myQ platform. The scope encompasses iOS, Android, and web applications, along with the interfaces those clients maintain with middleware and back-end services. The Senior Manager translates multi-year product and platform strategy into executable engineering plans while maintaining accountability for on-time, on-budget, and high-quality delivery across all managed teams. This position is responsible for defining and enforcing architectural standards across client, middleware, and back-end system boundaries - ensuring front-end teams build thin, display-focused clients that delegate business logic to centralized services. The incumbent operates as a player-coach: delegating architecture and technical design decisions to senior engineers when appropriate, and personally driving technical direction when the situation demands it. In some configurations, this role also carries accountability for coordinating multi-domain integration efforts that involve Firmware engineering and span multiple organizational boundaries. This position is responsible for the recruiting, developing, and direct supervision of Software Engineering Managers and/or Software Engineers. The Senior Manager leads operational excellence across all managed teams - setting standards for reliability, observability, and engineering rigor - and makes the strategic, long term technology decisions that reflect the health of the platform. This role reports to the Director of Software Engineering.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Own operational excellence and engineering rigor across all managed front-end teams; ensure on-time, on-budget, high-quality delivery across multiple concurrent programs; maintain and participate in on-call rotation as needed to support production system reliability
  • Responsible for 18-to-24-month project forecasting across all managed teams; accountable for resource planning, capacity management, and direct reports' project time accounting
  • Responsible for the functional design approach and technical feasibility for projects spanning multiple teams; know when to delegate architecture and technical design to senior engineers and when to personally drive and set the standard
  • Ensure functional process compliance and maintain standards-based documentation across conceptual, logical, and physical architectural views
  • Responsible for meeting and monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs) across all managed functional groups; escalate risks and drive resolution
  • Maintain and enforce sound architectural boundaries between client, middleware, and back-end systems; ensure front-end teams build display-focused clients that delegate business logic to centralized services
  • Ensure architectural principles and standards are clearly defined, documented, communicated, and maintained across project and product lifecycles
  • Manage the code branching strategy and release process, and drive maturity of multi-platform CI/CD processes and tooling, across development, QA, and production stages
  • Establish and maintain standards for UI consistency, observability, and accessibility across all managed front-end products and critical paths
  • Execute 3-to-5-year technology roadmap projects and maintain alignment with myQ platform strategy and business objectives
  • Responsible for annual expense and capital budget planning and tracking across all managed teams
  • Monitor and create development plans for direct reports that strengthen core competencies of the functional area
  • Review and approve functional deliverables, pull requests, and Change Approval Board (CAB) tickets for all managed teams; serve on Change Authorization Board as needed
  • Build and maintain strategic cross-functional relationships with Product, UX, Architecture, Middleware, DevOps, Infrastructure, and QA; represent front-end engineering in senior leadership forums, planning sessions, and change governance processes
  • Partner with Middleware, Back-End, DevOps, and Architecture teams on system boundaries, shared contracts, and integration standards; where applicable, lead multi-domain integration efforts involving Firmware and hardware-adjacent teams across organizational boundaries
  • Lead and develop direct reports - whether Software Engineering Managers or individual contributors - providing coaching, performance management, and career development support
  • Responsible for complying with the security requirements set forth by the Information Security team and the established ISO 27001 Security Roles, Responsibilities, and Authorities Document found in the ISMS Document Library
  • Comply with health and safety guidelines and rules; managers should also ensure compliance across their teams.
  • Protect Chamberlain Group's reputation by keeping information confidential.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reading professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
  • Contribute to the team effort by accomplishing related results and participating on projects as needed.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field is required
  • An advanced degree in a directly applicable area of study may substitute for up to two (2) years of job related experience
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience developing iOS, Android, or Web applications is required
  • Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in software development is required
  • Demonstrated experience leading multiple concurrent teams or programs is required
  • Experience managing other managers or team leads is preferred; direct management of front-line engineering teams at senior scope is also qualifying
  • Experience creating and maintaining technical documentation is required
  • Deep understanding of Agile methodologies and Scrum is required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Expert understanding in one or more of the following development platforms is required: iOS (XCode, Cocoa Touch, iOS SDK, Objective-C, Swift); Android (Java, Kotlin); Web (JavaScript, JavaScript frameworks, HTML, CSS)
  • Expertise in UI patterns such as MVC and MVVM is required
  • Expertise in RESTful services and the JSON file format is required
  • Strong understanding of client-to-middleware architecture and the ability to define and enforce appropriate system boundaries across client, middleware, and back-end layers is required
  • Demonstrated ability to define and execute multi-year technology roadmaps aligned with long-term platform and business objectives is required
  • Strong grasp of operational excellence practices including high-availability design, system observability, and cost-effective technical decision-making is required
  • Ability to work on multiple projects in a fast-paced work environment is required
  • Ability to operate as a player-coach - delegating technical design and architecture decisions to senior engineers while personally driving technical direction when the situation requires it is required
  • Ability to recognize issues in existing software and systems and put together improvement plans is required
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are required
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work cross-functionally with back-end, firmware, and quality engineering teams are required
  • Strong ability to estimate work, support program-level planning, and report out progress to senior leadership is required
  • Understanding of CI/CD tools, frameworks, and deployment processes is required

Other:

  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time domestically and internationally

Preferred Job Requirements:

  • Experience driving large-scale process improvement and organizational change is desired
  • Experience with budget management at the sub-org level is desired
  • Experience in an IoT or consumer connectivity software environment is desired
The pay range for this position is $159,490.00 - $267,742.00; base pay offered may vary depending on a number of factors including, but not limited to, the position offered, location, education, training, and/or experience.
