Job description

The Electrochemist/Test Engineer will specialize in designing, executing, and analyzing tests on electrochemical systems to evaluate performance, durability, and safety. This role will work onsite at ZincFive headquarters, in Tualatin, Oregon and reports to the Lead Battery Engineer.

Electrochemist/Test Engineer Job Duties:

  • Create and run, standardized test procedures for cells and stacks, including performance, life-cycle, and environmental testing
  • Analyze large datasets using tools like Python, MATLAB, JMP, or Excel to interpret electrochemical performance, degradation mechanisms, and safety metrics
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot electrochemical test stands (e.g., cell cyclers, potentiostats, EIS, GC, NMR)
  • Perform advanced diagnostics such as Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), and Polarization Curves to identify performance anomalies
  • Maintain high standards of safety (especially with hydrogen or high-voltage systems) and document results in technical reports to guide R&D and engineering teams
  • Work with cross-functional teams to improve cell design and integrate components
  • Sets up test stations, data acquisition systems, and other necessary instruments for specific testing
  • Drafts technical reports and proposals related to engineering projects
  • Ensuring compliance with safety regulations and maintaining a safe working environment
  • Identifying bugs, errors, and areas for improvement and collaborating with development teams to resolve issues
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or Electrochemistry
  • 3+ years of industry or research experience in battery, fuel cell, or electrolyzer testing
  • Deep understanding of electrochemistry fundamentals, thermodynamics, and mass transfer
  • Experience with LabVIEW for automation, data management, and scripting
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills to work in fast-paced or start-up environments
  • Microsoft Office Suite
  • Advanced knowledge of safety regulations and procedures in the industry

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masterโ€™s degree in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or Electrochemistry
  • Previous manufacturing experience
