What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a staff engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Staff Engineer, you need deep expertise in software engineering principles, system architecture, and problem-solving, typically supported by a relevant degree and extensive industry experience. Proficiency with programming languages, cloud platforms, CI/CD tools, and familiarity with agile methodologies are commonly required, along with experience in technical leadership. Exceptional communication, mentorship, and collaboration skills set top performers apart as they guide teams and influence technical direction. These skills ensure effective delivery of complex projects, foster innovation, and drive organizational technical excellence.

How does a staff engineer typically balance hands-on technical work with mentoring and guiding other engineers?

As a Staff Engineer, you'll often find yourself splitting time between solving complex technical challenges and supporting the growth of your team. While you will still engage in deep technical work, a significant part of your role involves mentoring less experienced engineers, setting technical direction, and reviewing designs or code. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong time management and communication skills, as you need to ensure project progress while enabling team members to learn and excel. Many organizations expect Staff Engineers to lead by example, champion best practices, and foster a collaborative environment.

What is a staff engineer?

You can find these positions in fields including software development, the aerospace industry, civil engineering, and medical science. In this career, your job duties vary significantly depending on your industry. Generally, you work with a number of other developers and engineers to develop new systems or products or improve existing materials or processes. While some employers prefer staff engineers with experience, you can secure an entry-level position with just the skills learned in your degree program.

What is a staff engineer?

A Staff Engineer is a senior technical role within engineering teams, often responsible for leading complex projects, setting technical direction, and mentoring other engineers. Unlike managerial roles, Staff Engineers typically remain deeply involved in hands-on technical work and architecture decisions. They play a critical role in bridging the gap between engineering execution and organizational strategy, ensuring that technical standards are maintained and innovations are implemented effectively. Staff Engineers may also collaborate with cross-functional teams to solve high-impact problems and drive the company's technical vision forward.

You might see a few cities listed, but no need to be in any of them! We're fully remote and hire across Canada and the U.S.
About the role:
We've built a financial empowerment platform that helps businesses of all sizes make a real impact on employee financial wellness, and the systems you architect here directly power that mission.
We're looking for a Staff Developer who genuinely cares about building things well. You'll take on the hardest technical problems, champion best practices, and bridge the gap between where our systems are today and where they need to be as we scale. If you're the kind of person who gets pulled toward hard architectural questions, enjoys mentoring, and reaches for data when something needs solving, this is a role where that curiosity gets put to good use every day.
Your impact:
  • Design and maintain scalable, secure software architectures aligned with business goals, resulting in robust and reliable systems
  • Introduce and implement best practices around OO, DDD, and microservices where appropriate
  • Use AI to streamline processes, reduce friction, and give time back to developers for the work that matters
  • Implement and enforce coding standards and best practices, driving measurable improvements in code quality and maintainability
  • Conduct regular code reviews with feedback that meaningfully reduces bug counts and improves software performance
  • Facilitate clear communication between development teams, product managers, and other stakeholders to keep projects aligned
  • Use data as your north star - leverage application data, third-party data, and our data warehouse to analyze and solve problems around both product impact and performance
  • Participate in our agile development process: sprint planning, story grooming, and standups
  • Champion our SDLC and secure coding practices across everything you ship

You bring:
  • 6+ years of experience with Ruby on Rails
  • A mastery of fundamentals: solid coding principles, domain-driven design, performant code and queries, unit and integration testing
  • Experience leading projects involving scale, concurrency, queuing, background processing, and efficient ingestion of third-party data
  • A security mindset: OWASP, secure development, and SOC-2 processes
  • Experience deploying resources outside of app dev (AWS, RDS, queues, serverless)
  • Track record of using AI to simplify workflows, eliminate bottlenecks, and shift focus toward meaningful work
  • Strong data engineering skills: complex SQL queries, optimization, ETL
  • Comfortable working across data warehouse and analytics tooling to surface insights, track down errors, and inform performance improvements

Research shows that while men apply to jobs when they meet an average of 60% of listed criteria, women and other marginalized folks tend to only apply when they check every box. Think you have what it takes, but not sure you check every box? Apply to the role anyways. We'd love to talk and determine together whether you could be a great fit!
Why you'll love working at ZayZoon:
  • Permanently Remote: Work from a desk, a coffee shop, or in the great outdoors - our jobs are fully remote, forever
  • Flexible Time Off: Whether it's a longer vacation to explore new horizons, a series of short breaks for regular rejuvenation, or stepping away for a new level of mastery in a skillset - our "You-do-You" time off program caters to the diverse and evolving lifestyles of our team with a maximum of 6 weeks vacation
  • Instant Benefits: All full-time employees get access to medical, vision, and dental benefits from their very first day including increased mental health coverage and a wellness stipend
  • Plus: Inclusive parental leave top-up, earned wage access, real time market data for salaries, a supportive culture for lifelong learners and more

What you can expect from us:
Every application will be reviewed by our team - we're committed to giving each application the attention it deserves because we know how important this step is for you. We want to make sure you're always in the loop and will respond to every application.
So go ahead and hit that apply button with confidence, knowing that we're here for you every step of the way! We can't wait to hear from you.
