General Engineer (Immediate Need)

Location: Long Beach, CA Schedule: Mondayโ€“Friday, Full-Time Salary Range: $100,000 โ€“ $145,000 annually

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced General Engineer to support complex healthcareโ€related engineering, design, construction, and facilities management projects. This role requires advanced technical expertise, strong project management capabilities, and the ability to provide professional engineering guidance in a highly regulated healthcare environment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Development & Planning

Determine project requirements, conduct reconnaissance, and prepare engineering designs, specifications, and cost estimates.

Apply broad engineering knowledge to resolve complex technical challenges requiring innovative solutions.

Perform or direct surveys and investigations to establish baseline data for design.

Evaluate design objectives, perform complex calculations, and identify efficient and economical design procedures.

Professional Engineering Oversight

Provide professional engineering advice to peers, subordinates, and nonโ€technical managers.

Review or direct the review of engineering plans, specifications, and design analyses.

Recommend improvements, direct necessary changes, and support subordinate personnel on highly complex studies.

Provide oversight and/or project management for construction and maintenance activities.

Construction, Maintenance & Project Administration

Perform scheduling, layout, inspection, and surveillance of construction operations, materials, and equipment.

Prepare detailed cost estimates for funding and bid evaluation.

Produce technical reports, correspondence, fact sheets, schedules, and status updates.

Collaborate with contractors to resolve unforeseen issues and latent conditions.

Review and evaluate shop drawings, samples, and material certifications for compliance.

Inโ€House Design & AE (Architect/Engineer) Management

Develop inโ€house designs, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates compliant with building and safety codes.

Establish design criteria for AE firms and prepare scopes of work.

Oversee, review, approve, or reject AE design deliverables.

Direct AE teams in preparing change order documentation.

Ensure adherence to VA and regulatory design and construction standards.

Environment of Care & Safety Compliance

Implement and monitor OSHA Life Safety, environmental, and health procedures.

Report safety hazards, accidents, and injuries.

Manage hazardous materials, SDS documentation, waste management, and fire protection compliance.

Support emergency preparedness and security policy implementation.

Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations.

Customer Service

Provide courteous, respectful, and consistent communication with veterans, visitors, staff, contractors, and stakeholders.

Resolve conflicts constructively and support VA mission objectives.

Infection Control

Follow infection control practices, including hand hygiene, universal precautions, and isolation procedures.

ADP Security

Protect sensitive printed and electronic data in accordance with the Privacy Act of 1974 and VA/VHA policies.

Follow all regulations regarding access to computerized systems and safeguarding access codes.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited institution.

Minimum 7 years of General Engineering experience.

Familiarity with Patient-Centered Care Culture in healthcare environments.

Knowledge of healthcare design, fire codes, building codes, barrierโ€free codes, systems, components, ergonomics, and safety criteria.

Ability to read, interpret, and review blueprints and specifications.

Strong written and verbal communication skills for interaction with contractors, management, vendors, Contracting Officers, and staff.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook).

Experience with Microsoft Project and Revit beneficial but not required.

Experience with VISTA (Veterans Health Information & Technology Architecture) beneficial but not required.

Preferred Qualifications

Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred.

Physical Requirements

Ability to walk construction sites, climb ladders, and access mechanical spaces.

Ability to lift up to 25 lbs occasionally.

Ability to work in environments with noise, dust, or temperature variations typical of construction and facility operations.

Work Environment

Primarily officeโ€based with frequent onโ€site inspections in active construction or healthcare facility environments.

May require occasional travel between facilities or project sites.
