Can a sport data analyst become a sports analyst?

A sport data analyst can transition to a sports analyst role, as both positions involve analyzing sports data and providing insights. However, a sports analyst may focus more on broader performance analysis, commentary, or scouting, often requiring strong communication skills and industry knowledge. Gaining experience in presentation, reporting, and understanding game strategies can facilitate this career shift.

How much do sport data analysts get paid?

Sport data analysts typically earn between $50,000 and $80,000 annually, with salaries increasing with experience, education, and technical skills such as proficiency in data analysis tools and programming languages. Entry-level positions may start around $40,000, while experienced analysts or those working with professional teams can earn over $100,000 per year.

What does a sport data analyst do?

As a sports data analyst, your job is to collect and monitor the statistics for an athlete, game, or team. As part of this analysis, you may use an algorithm to help predict future performance, help apply the information to business decisions, or provide stats and feedback for announcers to mention during a game. Sports data analyst roles fall into two positions. The first is the business aspect. In this version of the job, your main role is helping improve the team's performance by applying data. In the second position, you focus more on entertainment and providing data to fans who want to know more about the athletes. This is a more time-sensitive job during games, and most sports data analysts spend hours inputting and evaluating information so they can be ready to answer questions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sport data analyst?

To thrive as a Sport Data Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in statistics, and a relevant degree such as mathematics, data science, or sports analytics. Familiarity with data analysis tools like SQL, Python, R, and sports-specific software, as well as experience with data visualization platforms, is often required. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively with coaches and athletes are standout soft skills. These competencies are crucial for translating complex data into actionable insights that improve team performance and strategic decision-making.

How does a sport data analyst typically collaborate with coaches and athletes to improve team performance?

Sport Data Analysts work closely with coaches and athletes to translate complex data into actionable insights that enhance performance. They often attend training sessions and matches to collect real-time data, and then meet with coaching staff to discuss trends, strengths, and areas for improvement. What We Need
We're looking for a passionate Staff Data Analyst to support the Sports* Game Science & Insights team, to explore, analyze, report, and action on data from our portfolio of titles (WWE 2K, PGA TOUR 2K). We're looking for someone who can translate product & business knowledge into deep analysis and, in turn, translate to actionable insights for cross functional business stakeholders. As you deliver valuable insights to stakeholders, you will aim to build strong relationships, become a trusted partner among business functions, and scale out team efforts from one team to the next. Our mission is to enable our partners to be more proactive, productive & successful by providing best in class, end-to-end and scalable data solutions.
What You Will Do

  • Support business narratives and develop business cases with effective data storytelling. Focus on using data and hypothesis-driven decision-making to drive future growth and customer lifetime value
  • Learn different business teams' and stakeholders' ways of working and preferences for understanding data, and be a bridge between the data team and business teams (Product, Marketing, Commercial) to translate complex business needs into data-related projects
  • Tailor the output to match stakeholder needs, including reports, visualizations, charts, and tables
  • Gain an understanding of internal titles outside of our portfolio (NBA 2K, Borderlands, other 2K titles) to provide strong benchmarking and comparison points for business performance
  • Lead the exploration of creative new ways of measurement to identify patterns and causal relationships
  • Empower teams to track and analyze activity/productivity and support their research projects, leading the efforts towards building scalable self-service tools
  • Act as a subject matter expert to support analysts and other data-users to improve their capabilities. Grow and develop best practices that contribute to both the team and wider business understanding of our players
  • Data doesn't just appear overnight, we work with our stakeholders to understand what data matters most to their business and strategy. In addition to delivering insights on what is available to us, this role will be responsible for liaising with stakeholders to proactively identify what data we need to begin to record for future initiatives that drive value
What Will Make You A Great Fit
The ideal candidate for this role has the ability to see the underlying story in the data, know how to ask the right questions and relate output back to measurable player or business outcomes. A solution-oriented and creative problem solver. A self-starter with the passion and enthusiasm to join a growing insights team to get results for meaningful change.
  • Track record of successfully leading the delivery of insights and analysis across business functions (Product, Commercial, Marketing)
  • Proven ability to produce impactful insights that resulted in tangible enhancements to product or business outcomes
  • Profound knowledge in SQL
  • Great communication skills and a clear understanding of how to make insights understandable and actionable for the business
  • High degree of proactivity and curiosity to understand, measure, and improve our understanding of our players and their behaviour
