A mid-level Platform Engineer designs, builds, and operates shared platform capabilities that enable application and API teams to deploy, run, and scale services reliably and securely. The role focuses on operational ownership, automation, and platform reliability, with growing independence and technical depth, but without full architectural or strategic ownership.
This role typically supports cloud-native platforms (Kubernetes, API platforms, CI/CD, observability, security tooling) and participates in on-call, incident response, and continuous improvement activities.
Navy Federal Credit Union currently does not provide sponsorship for this role. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for current or future sponsorship.
Responsibilities
Platform Operations & Reliability
  • Operate and maintain shared platform services (e.g., Kubernetes clusters, API runtimes, ingress, service mesh, messaging/caching layers).
  • Monitor platform health using logging, metrics, and dashboards; identify and remediate reliability issues proactively.
  • Participate in production support, on-call rotations, and incident response, following defined runbooks and escalation paths.

Automation & DevOps Enablement
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure automation, and reusable templates for application teams.
  • Automate routine operational tasks (deployments, upgrades, certificate rotation, service account management).
  • Support onboarding of new services/APIs onto the platform.

Cloud & Infrastructure Engineering
  • Work with cloud services (primarily Azure) including networking, IAM, secrets management, and managed PaaS offerings.
  • Support platform upgrades and compatibility testing (e.g., Kubernetes, ingress, API gateways, runtime components).
  • Collaborate with network, security, and SRE teams on infrastructure changes.

Security, Compliance & Governance
  • Implement and maintain security controls such as TLS/certificates, secrets, RBAC, vulnerability remediation, and audit evidence.
  • Support compliance, risk assessments, and audit requests with accurate documentation.
  • Follow platform governance standards and change-management processes.

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
  • Partner with application/API teams to troubleshoot platform issues and improve developer experience.
  • Contribute to documentation, runbooks, and knowledge bases.
  • Suggest improvements to platform design, automation, and operational practices.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • 2+ years of experience in platform engineering, DevOps, SRE, or cloud infrastructure roles.
  • Proven experience supporting production systems at scale.
  • Exposure to regulated or enterprise environments is a plus.
  • Experience with Containers & Orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes/AKS).
  • Experience with CI/CD & Automation (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, Terraform, Helm).
  • Strong working knowledge of Azure Cloud.
  • Experience with Linux & Networking such as TCP/IP, DNS, TLS, load balancing, troubleshooting in Linux environments.

Platform & Runtime Technologies
  • Experience with API gateways / ingress (NGINX, Istio, Envoy, cloud-native gateways).
  • Experience with observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, App Insights, ELK/Splunk).
  • Experience with caching or messaging systems (e.g., Redis, Hazelcast, Kafka).

Security & Operations
  • Experience with certificate and secrets management (Vault, cloud key vaults, Venafi, etc.).
  • Experience with vulnerability scanning and remediation workflows.
  • Experience with incident, problem, and change management practices.

Desired Qualifications
  • 3 - 6 years of experience in platform engineering, DevOps, SRE, or cloud infrastructure roles.
