Job description

Mechanical Technician

Specter Aerospace is seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Technician to support the assembly, integration, testing, and operation of advanced hypersonic flight systems. Working alongside engineers, technicians, and test personnel, this role will be responsible for building and maintaining prototype hardware, supporting rapid design iterations, and executing development and test activities in a fast-paced startup environment.

The ideal candidate is hands-on, detail-oriented, and thrives in a dynamic setting where speed, quality, and teamwork are critical. This position will play a key role in transforming engineering designs into flight-ready hardware by supporting fabrication, mechanical assembly, vehicle integration, troubleshooting, and test operations.

About Specter Aerospace:

Specter Aerospace is building the next generation of hypersonic vehicles for defense applications. Specter is headquartered in Peabody, MA, just north of Boston, where it leverages its advanced propulsion technologies, manufacturing, and testing capabilities to rapidly develop supersonic and hypersonic systems. Funded by a mix of government R&D organizations, commercial customers, and private funding, Specter is a growing aerospace and defense startup. Specter is expanding its team in preparation for flight testing and full-scale production.

Role & Responsibilities:
  • Assemble mechanical, electromechanical, and aerospace hardware from engineering drawings, CAD models, and work instructions
  • Support prototype development, vehicle integration, and test operations
  • Perform precision fitting, drilling, tapping, machining, and fabrication of components and assemblies
  • Assist with environmental, structural, propulsion, and system-level testing activities
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues and implement corrective actions with engineering teams
  • Maintain assembly documentation, build records, and test reports
  • Operate shop equipment and tools safely while maintaining a clean and organized workspace
  • Support inventory management, material handling, and hardware tracking
  • Contribute to process improvements that increase quality, reliability, and production efficiency
Job Requirements:
  • Hands-on experience in mechanical assembly, manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, or related fields
  • 2+ years of experience assembling or maintaining mechanical or fluid systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, technical schematics, and assembly documentation
  • Basic machining, welding, or fabrication experience
  • Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, precision measurement equipment, and shop machinery
  • Experience with mechanical troubleshooting and root-cause analysis
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality standards
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in manufacturing and test environments
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Available for up to 10% travel for test activities
  • Ability to obtain a DoD security clearance (U.S. Citizenship required)
Desired Skills:
  • Experience in aerospace, aviation, defense, automotive, robotics, or high-performance manufacturing environments
  • Experience in creating fluid assemblies from Plumbing and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and engineer work instructions
  • Familiarity with GD&T, torque specifications, and mechanical inspection procedures
  • Experience supporting prototype builds or low-volume production
  • Knowledge of fluid systems, propulsion systems, composites, or pressure systems
EEO Statement:

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
