What is a Specification Sales job?

A Specification Sales job involves working closely with architects, designers, and specifiers to get a company's products incorporated into project specifications. Professionals in this role focus on building relationships, providing technical expertise, and ensuring that their products meet the required standards and regulations. Rather than direct selling, the emphasis is on influencing decision-makers early in the design phase to drive long-term sales.

What does a typical day look like for someone in Specification Sales?

In Specification Sales, your day often includes meeting with architects, engineers, and other decision-makers to discuss and promote your company’s products for incorporation into project specifications. You’ll spend time responding to technical inquiries, preparing documentation, updating project tracking systems, and collaborating closely with both internal sales teams and external stakeholders. Site visits, presentations, and ongoing relationship management are common, as you work to ensure your products are chosen for current and upcoming projects. This dynamic role offers variety and frequent opportunities to build strong professional networks within the construction and design industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Specification Sales position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Specification Sales, you need deep knowledge of industry products and standards, a background in sales or technical fields, and ideally a degree in engineering, architecture, or a related discipline. Familiarity with CRM software, project management tools, and specification writing platforms is often needed, along with certifications like LEED or product-specific training. Outstanding relationship-building, persuasive communication, and problem-solving abilities help individuals excel in influencing decisions and collaborating with architects, engineers, and contractors. These combined skills are essential because the role involves guiding projects from concept to completion by ensuring specified products are selected and successfully integrated into designs.

This is a strategic, "closer" role where you will own the final stages of the sales cycle-turning specifications into revenue. You will serve as the regional pivot point, aligning specification sales, developers, dealers, and contractors, while scaling and strengthening the Hospitality Technology Integrator (HTI) network.
You will drive revenue growth by strengthening, enabling, and expanding Lutron's dealer and contractor channel. Your focus will be on closing strategic opportunities while supporting channel partners through targeted sales enablement, technical training alignment, and program compliance-ensuring successful execution of complex projects and effective representation of Lutron's solutions.
You will build and maintain a strong network of electrical contractors and key project influencers, leading relationship development, negotiations, pricing strategy, and competitive positioning. Your efforts will increase project conversion rates, expand market influence, and ensure Lutron's solutions are consistently supported and specified through a well aligned channel strategy.
Success in this role requires close collaboration with regional sales, specification, business development, and marketing teams to convert early design wins into profitable project execution through the channel.
Responsibilities
Project Closing & Revenue Generation
Your primary metric is converted revenue. You will steer high-value hotel and resort projects from the "specified" phase to the "closed" phase.
  • Partner with specification sales, brand managers, and developer account owners to ensure Lutron remains the preferred choice through the bidding process.
  • Manage a regional pipeline, identify risks to project wins, and drive recovery strategies, informed by a deep understanding of the hospitality construction cycle and stakeholder decision dynamics.
  • Lead complex negotiations with contractors and developers to remove final obstacles and secure the order.
  • Close complex, multi-stakeholder hospitality deals by aligning owners, architects, and executing contractors through final award.

Channel Management & Development
You will own developing and maintaining our Caribbean sales infrastructure, ensuring our partners are equipped to win.
  • Manage, train, and develop our Caribbean Hospitality Technology Integrator (HTI) network, motivating and enabling dealers and distributors across multiple international Caribbean territories.
  • Set clear sales targets, execution benchmarks, and accountability standards for all channel partners. Drive the account growth plans on an annual basis.
  • Drive structured sales enablement programs to ensure dealers understand Lutron's hospitality value proposition, innovations, and competitive positioning.
  • Identify geographic or capability gaps in the current network and recruit new partners to address them.

Strategic Contractor & Partnership Management
As you are responsible for the "last mile" of the sale, which requires deep, high-level relationships with the entities that execute these projects.
  • Develop and own direct, senior-level relationships with major regional contractors.
  • Educate Contractors on value of Lutron solutions and simplified implementation.
  • Drive and mentor our HTIs to build their own relationships with local contractors and site leads, ensuring Lutron is the preferred partner at every level of the construction.
  • Implement programs to ensure Lutron is the "standard" for regional contractors when they provide value-engineering feedback to developers.

Market Expansion & Intelligence
Represent Lutron Hospitality in the Caribbean.
  • Expand Lutron's presence across key islands and emerging resort destinations, leveraging and expanding existing relationships within the Caribbean hospitality development community.
  • Track competitor movement, pricing trends, and project activity to maintain a dominant market share.
  • Represent the brand at regional hospitality summits, industry events, and high-level customer meetings.

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in hospitality-focused or complex project-based sales.
  • Experience with lighting controls, building automation, or smart building technologies (preferred).
  • Fluency in English required; professional proficiency in Spanish preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently throughout the Caribbean (up to 50%+).
