What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Project Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Project Engineer, you need strong technical knowledge in software development, project management, and systems engineering, often supported by a degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), version control systems (such as Git), and relevant certifications (like PMP or Agile/Scrum) is typically required. Exceptional problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills help you coordinate teams and translate requirements into actionable tasks. These abilities ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and meet high-quality standards.

Can I make 200k a year as a software engineer?

Software engineers can earn $200,000 or more annually, especially with senior roles, specialized skills, or working in high-cost-of-living areas. Achieving this salary often requires extensive experience, expertise in in-demand technologies, and sometimes working at large tech companies or in leadership positions.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior software engineers, especially those with extensive experience, specialized skills in areas like machine learning or cloud computing, and working in high-paying industries or companies, can earn $300,000 or more annually. Executive-level engineering roles such as engineering managers or technical directors may also reach this compensation level, often including bonuses and stock options.

How does a Software Project Engineer typically interact with cross-functional teams during a project lifecycle?

Software Project Engineers regularly collaborate with cross-functional teams that may include software developers, QA testers, UI/UX designers, and product managers. They act as a bridge, ensuring that technical requirements are clearly communicated and project milestones are met. This often involves leading meetings, tracking progress, resolving technical blockers, and aligning the team's efforts with overall project goals. Strong communication and organizational skills are essential for facilitating effective teamwork and delivering successful software solutions.

Will AI replace coders by 2040?

As a Software Project Engineer, it is unlikely that AI will fully replace human coders by 2040. AI tools can automate routine coding tasks and assist in development, but complex problem-solving, creativity, and understanding user needs remain human skills essential for software development. The role is expected to evolve with AI integration rather than be replaced entirely.

What are Software Project Engineers?

Software Project Engineers are professionals who oversee the planning, development, and delivery of software projects. They act as a bridge between technical teams and stakeholders, ensuring that project goals, timelines, and quality standards are met. Their work includes managing schedules, coordinating resources, resolving technical issues, and facilitating communication across teams. They often have a strong background in software development as well as project management skills.

What engineers make $500,000?

Job Summary:
Joby Aviation is a company that designs, develops, and flight-tests innovative aircraft using a software-first autonomy approach. They are seeking a Software Project Engineer to drive technical execution across their software and autonomy development portfolio, coordinating multiple workstreams and maintaining clarity around project objectives and risks.
Responsibilities:
โ€ข Own the integrated software execution plan across programs, maintaining a clear view of workstreams, dependencies, milestones, technical risks, and critical path.
โ€ข Work with software engineering leads to decompose high-level program objectives into actionable engineering work with clear priorities, owners, and acceptance criteria.
โ€ข Coordinate planning and prioritization across GNC, flight software, embedded systems, simulation, GCS, and test infrastructure teams.
โ€ข Use technical judgment to identify unrealistic plans, missing dependencies, ambiguous requirements, and integration risks before they become blockers.
โ€ข Recommend lightweight process for project management and engineering execution, adapted to the team's needs to increase development velocity without adding unnecessary overhead.
โ€ข Track and communicate schedule risks, blockers, and technical trade-offs to engineering leadership and program management. Surface problems early and drive resolution.
โ€ข Manage cross-team dependencies, particularly at the boundary between software development, hardware, systems engineering, and flight test.
โ€ข Coordinate the software design-implementation-release lifecycle in collaboration with software engineering leads, including design reviews, implementation sequencing, integration readiness, and release planning.
โ€ข Support flight test campaign planning by ensuring software deliverables are technically scoped, scheduled, tested, and tracked against test objectives.
โ€ข Help maintain team-level organization around priorities, commitments, decision records, and follow-through so that the engineering team can execute with clarity.
Qualifications:
Required:
โ€ข Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field.
โ€ข 5+ years of experience in software engineering, project engineering, technical leadership, or technical execution for software-intensive systems.
โ€ข Hands-on software development experience or demonstrated ability to operate deeply in software architecture, implementation workflows, and technical risk.
โ€ข Demonstrated ability to understand complex software systems, ask high-quality technical questions, and reason about architecture, interfaces, integration, and release risk.
โ€ข Experience helping organize or drive execution in a hardware-integrated or embedded systems environment where software delivery is coupled to physical test milestones.
โ€ข Strong organizational skills with experience maintaining integrated plans across multiple concurrent technical workstreams.
โ€ข Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical plans, risks, trade-offs, and priorities clearly to both engineering and program stakeholders.
โ€ข Experience with iterative development practices in a context where requirements and program needs evolve quickly.
โ€ข Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to maintain forward progress when the plan is changing.
โ€ข Proficiency with project management and collaboration tools such as ClickUp, Jira, Smartsheet, or similar.
โ€ข This position must meet US export control compliance requirements, therefore a candidate must qualify as a 'US Person' as defined by 22 C.F.R. 120.15. 'US Person' includes US Citizens, lawful permanent residents, refugees, or asylees.
Preferred:
โ€ข Aerospace, defense, or robotics industry experience.
โ€ข Experience supporting flight test programs or hardware development programs with tightly coupled software deliverables.
โ€ข Prior experience as a software engineer, technical lead, systems engineer, project engineer, or integration engineer on a software-intensive system.
โ€ข Familiarity with software configuration management and release processes for safety-critical or embedded systems.
โ€ข Understanding of GNC, flight software, embedded systems, build systems, simulation, and modern software development processes.
โ€ข Familiarity with systems engineering processes, including requirements management, V&V planning, traceability, and interface definition.
โ€ข Experience managing cross-site technical execution or coordinating between engineering and flight test at different locations.
