Inside the Role

The responsibility of this role is focused on the US market regulatory requirements definition (Internal Combustion and Zero Emission Powertrain) and related vehicle system validation with production readiness signoffs.
As a Sr. Tech Expert in this role, you are responsible for requirements definition and validation of legislative (CARB & EPA) communication protocols with all associated embedded software functions, across all powertrain and relevant vehicle Electronic Control Units. You are further responsible for development and validation of on-board diagnostic monitors and related software features. You will define inter-module communication requirements for complex, distributed powertrain and legislative systems and functions.
In this role, you will represent Detroit Engineering and TT/S within SAE Truck and Bus Council, Engine Manufacturer's Association and other industry working groups.

What You Drive at DTNA

  • Definition of US regulatory requirements for the Software Defined Vehicles (and other legacy Electric and Electronic Architectures).
  • Ownership of SAE protocol requirements and related legislative messages for all powertrain and vehicle Electronic Control Units.
  • Responsibility for definition, implementation guidance and validation of legislative standardization requirements. (e.g. Data Stream and Freeze Frame)
  • Specification, review and validation of internal vehicle message matrix and vehicle network architectures.
  • Definition of inter-module communication related requirements for complex, distributed features and functions.
  • Communication protocol related diagnostic monitor and legislative software feature and system ownership.
  • Active SAE Truck and Bus Council participation, (including any related discussions with CARB and EPA regulators) specific to CAN and Ethernet protocols.
  • Responsible for definition and validation of On-Board Diagnostic related Detroit Powertrain Diagnostic tool requirements.
  • Contribution toward global Powertrain Software Design Reviews focused on the regulatory impact.
  • Development of legislative documentation packages in support of annual CARB and EPA certification.
  • Execution of standardized OBD System Validation tests and development of validation scripts for newly released OBD software functions, including the validation of legislative (CARB & EPA) communication protocols.

Knowledge You Should Bring

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline and 5+ years relevant industry experience with specialization in powertrain combustion trucking related technical skillset, is required.
  • Strong oral, written communication and analytical skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and self-starter.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and able to work with and get work done effectively through others.
  • Strong computer skills including MS, Vector, TraceTronic, Jira, DOORS, Windchill and others.
  • Knowledge and experience with legislative SAE vehicle communications protocols (J1939 and J1979-2 / 3).
  • Knowledge of Heavy Duty Commercial Vehicle communication networks and diagnostic protocols.
  • Knowledge and Experience with dSPACE HiL environments (with ProveTech and TraceTronic ECU.Test Software).
  • Knowledge and Experience with Class 8 Heavy Duty Vehicle Validation.
  • Excellent analytical thinking skills with the attention to detail.
  • Creative and Innovative thinking with the exceptional problem-solving skills.
  • Passion for hands-on engineering utilizing all available test environments and vehicle systems.
  • Knowledge of Python and JavaScript scripting languages.
  • Knowledge of Vector CAPL scripting language.
  • Knowledge and Experience with development of scripts for CAN data collection and CAN traffic analysis.

Exceptional Candidates Might Have

  • 7+ years of proficiency with powertrain combustion, and alternative systems.
  • Experience with DTNA CEEA+ and CEEAce vehicle EE Architecture Systems.
  • Passion for and the experience with Heavy Duty ICE Powertrain System Regulatory Certification in accordance with CARB 1971.1 and EPA 1036.
  • Passion for and the experience with the Heavy-Duty ZEV Powertrain System Regulatory Certification.
  • Passion for and the experience with design and deployment of CAN validation environments.
  • Experience with design and prototyping of complex hardware and firmware for desktop validation of SAE communications protocols, along with the custom wiring harness design using low cost off the shelf electronic components (e.g. Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry PI, etc.)
  • Experience with design and implementation of regulatory CAN data collection and analysis pipelines from a test vehicle fleet (Big Data approach).
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink model validation and interpretation.
  • Knowledge of and experience with the relevant regulatory communication standards - RP1210, J1939, J1979, IEE 802.11 and others.
  • On Board Diagnostics (OBD), Functional Safety (FuSa), Cyber Security (CySec) - cross regulatory domain requirements alignment and deconfliction.
