Job description

At eBay, we're more than a global ecommerce leader - we're changing the way the world shops and sells. Our platform empowers millions of buyers and sellers in more than 190 markets around the world. We're committed to pushing boundaries and leaving our mark as we reinvent the future of ecommerce for enthusiasts.
Our customers are our compass, authenticity thrives, bold ideas are welcome, and everyone can bring their unique selves to work - every day. We're in this together, sustaining the future of our customers, our company, and our planet.
Join a team of passionate thinkers, innovators, and dreamers - and help us connect people and build communities to create economic opportunity for all.
About the Team and the Role
Join eBay's Payments Platform team, supporting millions of buyers and sellers in over 190 markets worldwide. The team builds and runs fault-tolerant, high-performance payment systems powering eBay's global transaction engine. These systems handle real-time authorization, settlement, regulatory compliance, and fraud prevention. As a Senior Software Engineer (SE3), you will take full ownership of critical payment flows. You will influence architecture and collaborate with product, development, and platform teams to deliver secure, scalable, and reliable systems at substantial scale. This role works with the Engineering Manager, Payments Platform.
What You Will Accomplish
  • Build and deliver end-to-end payment processing flows - including authorization, capture, settlement, funding, reconciliation, and exception handling - at global scale.
  • Build and own high-performance, scalable microservices using REST/gRPC APIs and distributed systems principles that process millions of transactions daily.
  • Champion security and compliance by chipping in to PCI DSS audits, implementing mutual authentication, encryption, tokenization, and certificate lifecycle management.
  • Drive quality through automation, build reviews, and detailed testing across the full SDLC - from development through production validation and release support.
  • Serve as a technical leader in Agile/Scrum delivery - crafting builds, owning sprint commitments, and mentoring peers across a multi-functional team.
  • Ensure system reliability through on-call participation, incident response, root-cause analysis, and long-term remediation of production issues.

What You Will Bring
  • Master's degree or higher in Computer Science or equivalent experience; 6+ years of hands-on software build and application development experience.
  • Deep experience with payments and FinTech systems - credit card processing, ACH, wire transfers, real-time authorization, and settlement.
  • Hands-on experience crafting or building a payments ledger system, including double-entry bookkeeping, ledger reconciliation, and financial audit trails.
  • Deep knowledge of payment security standards: PCI DSS, mTLS, mutual authentication, HMAC, encryption, and tokenization.
  • Proficiency in Java and the Spring ecosystem (Spring, Spring Boot); deep understanding of JDBC, REST, OAuth, and JSON-based service development.
  • Hands-on experience with relational and NoSQL data stores (Couchbase, MongoDB, Cassandra, Hadoop) and object-oriented/functional programming with reactive and async patterns.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work independently and effectively in multi-group, cross-discipline environments.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML techniques - experience with LLM integration, timely engineering, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), or ML model serving to build intelligent payment features or operational tooling.
