Payment Software Engineer information

What does a payment software engineer do?

A Payment Software Engineer designs, develops, and maintains software systems that handle financial transactions, such as credit card processing, digital wallets, and online payments. They ensure that payment systems are secure, reliable, and compliant with industry standards like PCI DSS. These engineers often work closely with banks, fintech companies, and e-commerce platforms to integrate payment solutions and resolve technical issues related to transactions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a payment software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Payment Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (such as Java, Python, or C#), a solid understanding of payment processing systems, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with payment gateways, APIs, PCI DSS compliance, and experience with tools like Stripe, PayPal, or Square are typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and clear communication help you collaborate effectively and resolve complex payment issues. These skills are crucial for building secure, reliable, and scalable payment solutions in a highly regulated and fast-evolving industry.

What are some common challenges payment software engineers face when integrating with third-party payment gateways?

Payment Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as handling diverse API standards, ensuring secure data transmission, and managing compliance requirements like PCI DSS when integrating with third-party payment gateways. Additionally, they must account for various edge cases, including transaction failures and currency conversions, while maintaining a seamless user experience. Effective collaboration with product managers, QA teams, and external partners is essential to address these complexities and ensure reliable payment processing.

Job description

About Rundoo ℹ️

Our mission is to empower independent supply stores with best-in-class technology. Think of your local hardware store or mom-and-pop nursery—these are our clients. From paint to lumber to flooring, over 200,000 such stores across the country sell over $1T of building materials annually using outdated, on-premises systems. We’re aiming to help them modernize so that they can continue to thrive.

Backed by leading investors including Battery, Bessemer and CRV, we've raised $48M across four rounds and are growing quickly: We're live in over 500 stores across the USA, Canada, and the Caribbean, and integrated with over 20 industry partners. Our team is made up of builders, sellers, and industry veterans with a shared goal: to bring modern technology to an overlooked industry.

About the role

You’ll be based out of our Redwood City office and work in person with the rest of our engineering team. As a Software Engineer, you’ll ship features end-to-end across our stack: a Go backend, a TypeScript/React web app, and React Native mobile apps. Your work goes directly to the supply-store owners and staff who run their businesses on Rundoo every day.

You’ll report to one of our engineering leads and work in a small pod of about 4–5 engineers. You’ll own clearly-scoped projects from start to rollout, get deep in the part of the product your pod owns, and build your system and product intuition with mentorship from senior engineers through pairing and code review. It’s a good fit for someone 1–3 years into their career.

What you’ll do as a Software Engineer at Rundoo ️

  • Ship features end-to-end, from the proto and backend logic to the web and mobile UI

  • Own small, clearly-scoped projects (typically 1–3 weeks) with limited direction, from scoping through rollout

  • Go deep in your pod’s part of the product so you can fix arbitrary bugs and add new features with confidence

  • Align with PM and tech lead on what you’re building and why, and write tickets clear enough for another engineer to pick up

  • Talk to clients directly, calling stores to research how they work and to get their feedback on what you’ve shipped

  • Write design docs for your features and reason about how your work interacts with adjacent systems

  • Review teammates’ code and act on the feedback you get, keeping our codebase readable and maintainable

  • Spot broken team processes and fix them, automating manual work where it speeds up delivery

Requirements ☑️

  • 1–3 years of professional software engineering experience

  • Solid command of computer-science fundamentals and fluency in at least one production language

  • Comfort shipping features end-to-end and debugging across the stack

  • Based in (or willing to relocate to) the Bay Area and able to work in person 4 days a week in our Redwood City office

Bonus points

  • Experience with Go, TypeScript/React, or React Native

  • Experience at an early-stage startup, or another fast-moving environment

  • Familiarity with ERP, POS, payments, or other system-of-record software

Benefits ️

  • Full medical, dental, and vision coverage (100% of premiums for you, 50% for dependents)

  • Life Insurance

  • 401k with Betterment

  • Unlimited PTO with 10 company paid holidays

  • In-office gym

  • Daily team lunches

  • Learning materials and audiobook subscriptions

Compensation

  • Base Salary: $186K

  • Equity package of $101K / 0.0440% / 7,602 options

Meet some of the team

  • George: Studied computer science and math at Stanford; worked a couple internships at Meta + some startups in Denver; jaywalking ticket recipient

  • Santi: Studied CE and played varsity soccer at Waterloo: internships at Replicant and other Canadian startups

  • Vidya: Studied Computer Science at UC Berkeley; worked at Ironclad for 5 years as a Software Engineer and Engineering Manager; south Indian classical dancer

  • Umer: CS at NUS; interned at Visa and a couple of startups in Singapore. Has an identical twin ‍♂️

  • Jordan: Studied computer engineering at Waterloo; did internships at IBM, Rivian, and a couple startups; Played the Saxophone professionally for a while

Interview Process

  1. Intro Call – Meet a recruiter to learn more about each other (20 mins, remote)

  2. Live coding screen with Andrew (45 mins, remote)

  3. Take Home Assignment

  4. Onsite – A mix of technical and culture interviews with the team (~4 hours, in person)

About our founders

  1. Andrew (CTO): studied computer science & humanities at Stanford; worked as a software engineer and head of engineering at Apple & Anova; danced with the SF ballet (where he met his wife)!

  2. Nick (CEO): studied math & computer science at Stanford; worked as a trader at Bridgewater & Citadel and as a PM at Google & Enigma; distantly related to the founder of the Hershey company

How we've fundraised

We've raised $48m across four rounds:

  1. A $2m pre-seed led by Kent Bennett at Bessemer with participation from Plug & Play, Quiet Capital, and Sequoia.

  2. A $5m seed led by Caitlin Bolnick Rellas at CRV.

  3. An $11m series A led again by Bessemer and CRV.

  4. A $30m series B led by Battery.
