What does a Software Manager do?

A Software Manager oversees software development teams, ensuring projects are completed on time and meet quality standards. They coordinate between team members, manage resources, and communicate with stakeholders about progress and requirements. Additionally, they may be responsible for hiring, mentoring, and evaluating team performance. Their role bridges the gap between technical staff and upper management to align technology goals with business objectives.

What Is a Software Manager?

A software manager oversees the development, installation, and maintenance of new or upgraded software for an organization. The main difference between a Software Manager and a Software Engineer lies in their roles. Software Managers focus on team leadership, project management, and strategic planning, while Software Engineers are primarily responsible for coding and developing software. Both roles require technical knowledge, but their responsibilities and work focus differ significantly.

How does a Software Manager typically balance hands-on technical work with leadership responsibilities?

Software Managers often juggle both technical and leadership duties, but the balance can vary depending on the organization and team size. In many cases, Software Managers spend a significant portion of their time on people management tasks such as mentoring team members, conducting code reviews, planning sprints, and facilitating communication between stakeholders. However, they may also remain involved in architectural decisions or critical technical challenges to stay connected with the team's work. Effective Software Managers prioritize delegating coding tasks to their team while focusing on enabling productivity, resolving blockers, and ensuring project alignment with business goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Manager, you need a strong background in software development, project management, and leadership, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with Agile methodologies, version control systems like Git, and project management tools such as Jira is typically required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and team-building skills set outstanding managers apart in this role. These competencies are essential for delivering projects on time, fostering effective collaboration, and driving high-performing engineering teams.

Job description

Our team at Blackline Safety is growing! As a people-driven technology company, with a mission to make sure every worker returns home safely, we drive innovation, practice resiliency, demonstrate leadership, go the extra mile for our customers, and empower our people to be their best.

Our Software Development team is expanding, and we're seeking a Manager, Software to drive technical excellence and team growth. This role blends people leadership, technical oversight, and delivery accountability. You will partner closely with Product, Architecture, and other cross functional teams to ensure development efforts align with business goals and customer needs. This role has a strong mandate to transform how software quality is built, measured, and owned, with a focus on scalable test automation and developer-owned quality practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • People & Team Leadership
    • Lead, coach, and develop a team of software and QA automation developers through regular 1:1s, feedback, and performance reviews
    • Foster a culture of accountability, psychological safety, continuous improvement, and technical excellence
    • Identify skill gaps and create development plans to grow technical and leadership capabilities
  • Delivery & Execution
    • Own delivery outcomes for your team, ensuring commitments are met with high quality and predictable timelines
    • Balance short-term delivery needs with long-term platform and architectural health
    • Actively manage scope, risk, dependencies, and trade offs across initiatives
    • Drive a measurable improvement in software quality by reducing defect escape rates and improving key quality metrics which you will help define
  • Quality Transformation & Test Automation Strategy
    • Own the design and evolution of test automation frameworks and tooling, ensuring long-term reliability, maintainability, and performance
    • Guide teams in applying appropriate testing strategies (unit, integration, end-to-end), ensuring a balanced and maintainable test pyramid
    • Scale developer-owned quality models, reducing reliance on downstream QA and improving feedback cycles
  • Technical Leadership
    • Ensure best practices in software design, code quality, testing strategy, and testability, partnering with teams to build quality into system design from the start
    • Partner with architects and senior and staff developers on system design and technical strategy
    • Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices to ensure tight integration of automated testing into delivery workflows
  • Process & Collaboration
    • Improve engineering processes, tooling, and metrics to increase team efficiency and transparency
    • Explore and adopt modern approaches to test automation, including AI-assisted test generation, intelligent test selection, and tooling that improves test effectiveness and developer productivity
    • Participate in and help evolve on-call rotation and incident management practices, using production insights to improve system reliability and inform quality and testing strategy

About You

  • Minimum 5 years of professional software development experience
  • Minimum 2 years of experience managing or leading software development and or QA automation teams
  • Strong programming skills with the ability to design, review, and mentor others in test automation code (e.g., Python, JavaScript, or similar)
  • Experience building or evolving test automation frameworks, not just using them
  • Strong understanding of modern software development practices and architecture
  • Experience delivering production systems in a cloud or distributed environment
  • Proven ability to coach developers and manage performance constructively
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
