What Is the Job of a Software Engineer?

Software engineers design, build, and maintain software systems for electronic devices. A software engineer may operate alone, but typically they spend their time collaborating with other engineers, scientists, and various specialists to come up with creative solutions.

On a day-to-day basis, software engineers operate as the creative brain behind electronic devices. They ensure active programs run smoothly and may recommend software updates for product optimization. In some cases, a software engineer may write or program code. Software engineers may also spend time troubleshooting and explaining programs to clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with coding languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), version control systems like Git, and knowledge of software development methodologies are typically required. Excellent teamwork, communication, and adaptability distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure efficient, high-quality software development that meets user needs and adapts to technological changes.

What are some common challenges software engineers face when collaborating on large development teams?

Software engineers working on large teams often encounter challenges with communication, code integration, and maintaining consistent coding standards. Coordinating across multiple developers can lead to merge conflicts and misunderstandings about project requirements or priorities. Adopting tools like version control systems, regular code reviews, and clear documentation helps mitigate these issues. Building strong collaboration skills and proactively seeking clarification are key to ensuring smooth teamwork and project success.

What are Software Engineers?

Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain computer software and systems. They use programming languages, engineering principles, and problem-solving skills to build applications, websites, or software solutions that meet specific needs. Software Engineers may work in a variety of industries, such as technology, finance, healthcare, or entertainment, collaborating with other team members to deliver functional and reliable software. Their role often involves analyzing user requirements, writing code, debugging errors, and continually improving software performance.

What is the difference between Software Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectSoftware EngineerSoftware Developer
CredentialsBachelor's degree in CS or related field, certificationsBachelor's degree often preferred, certifications optional
Work EnvironmentDesigning, developing, testing, and maintaining software systemsWriting, coding, and implementing software applications
Industry UsageUsed across tech, finance, healthcare, and more for system-level rolesCommonly used in app and web development projects
Search IntentUnderstanding roles, responsibilities, and qualificationsLearning about coding, programming, and project work

While both roles involve software creation, Software Engineers typically focus on designing and architecting complex systems, whereas Software Developers mainly concentrate on coding and building specific applications. The roles often overlap, but the Engineer role may require broader system knowledge and design skills.

Job description

Software Engineer I
Are you ready to start your career in software engineering and contribute to real-world security and IoT solutions? Do you want hands-on experience building software that interacts directly with hardware devices, backend services, and web applications? If so, we invite you to join our team at Alarm.com.
As a Software Engineer I, you will work on a cross-functional product team and contribute production code across multiple layers of the stack. You'll implement features from specifications, collaborate closely with senior engineers, product managers, QA, and hardware teams, and progressively take ownership of well-scoped projects. This role is designed to help you grow from executing defined tasks to independently delivering meaningful components of larger systems.
Responsibilities
As a Software Engineer I, you will:

  • Design, implement, and test well-scoped software features (with guidance as needed) across backend services, web applications, databases, and hardware-integrated systems.
  • Implement functionality from specifications and design documents, asking clarifying questions and identifying gaps or inconsistencies in requirements.
  • Develop and maintain backend workflows and messaging-based integrations, including parsers, processors, and supporting business logic.
  • Use approved AI tools and models, both locally and cloud-based, to help analyze unfamiliar or complex code, explore implementation approaches, and complete directed coding tasks (while validating outputs, protecting sensitive data, and adhering to engineering and security best practices.)
  • Write and maintain unit tests and assist with test data setup to ensure correctness, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Participate in code reviews, incorporating feedback and contributing thoughtful suggestions to improve code quality.
  • Refactor existing code to improve readability, performance, and long-term maintainability.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Quality Engineering, and hardware teams to clarify requirements, resolve issues, and deliver features.
  • Take ownership of assigned features or small projects, tracking work through completion and communicating status and risks.
  • Proactively identify additional work when capacity allows and communicate availability to the team.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Technical Scope
In this role, you may work with:
  • Backend systems and web applications built with C# and .NET.
  • Databases and in-memory data stores using SQL, SQL Server, and Redis.
  • Device and service messaging systems, including Kafka, RESTful APIs, and gRPC, to initiate actions and monitor device state.
  • Cloud-native infrastructure and deployment tools, such as Argo, Docker, Kubernetes, and major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Internal tooling and shared libraries that improve testing, development efficiency, and code quality.
Requirements
  • 0-2 years of professional software development experience (internships, co-ops, or academic projects acceptable).
  • B.A. or B.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Experience with object-oriented programming (C# or similar languages).
  • Familiarity with web technologies and modern front-end frameworks (Ember.js, Angular, or React a plus; expertise not required).
  • Working knowledge of databases and SQL.
  • Ability to read, understand, and implement from technical specifications.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and comfort working in unfamiliar areas of the codebase.
  • Clear and professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to learn new systems, tools, and domains, including hardware-integrated software.
What Success Looks Like in This Role
A successful Software Engineer I:
  • Delivers high-quality, tested features with guidance and increasing independence.
  • Communicates clearly during design discussions, code reviews, and cross-team collaboration.
  • Seeks feedback and incorporates it quickly.
  • Demonstrates ownership over assigned features and follows through to completion.
  • Gradually expands technical breadth across the stack and product domain.
  • Contributes positively to team culture and shared engineering standards.
Please note that sponsorship of new applicants for employment authorization, or any other immigration-related support, is not available for this position at this time.
