What is a software engineer?

Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain computer software and systems. They use programming languages, engineering principles, and problem-solving skills to build applications, websites, or software solutions that meet specific needs. Software Engineers may work in a variety of industries, such as technology, finance, healthcare, or entertainment, collaborating with other team members to deliver functional and reliable software. Their role often involves analyzing user requirements, writing code, debugging errors, and continually improving software performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with coding languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), version control systems like Git, and knowledge of software development methodologies are typically required. Excellent teamwork, communication, and adaptability distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure efficient, high-quality software development that meets user needs and adapts to technological changes.

What are some common challenges software engineers face when collaborating on large development teams?

Software engineers working on large teams often encounter challenges with communication, code integration, and maintaining consistent coding standards. Coordinating across multiple developers can lead to merge conflicts and misunderstandings about project requirements or priorities. Adopting tools like version control systems, regular code reviews, and clear documentation helps mitigate these issues. Building strong collaboration skills and proactively seeking clarification are key to ensuring smooth teamwork and project success.

What is the difference between Software Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectSoftware EngineerSoftware Developer
CredentialsBachelor's degree in CS or related field, certificationsBachelor's degree often preferred, certifications optional
Work EnvironmentDesigning, developing, testing, and maintaining software systemsWriting, coding, and implementing software applications
Industry UsageUsed across tech, finance, healthcare, and more for system-level rolesCommonly used in app and web development projects
Search IntentUnderstanding roles, responsibilities, and qualificationsLearning about coding, programming, and project work

While both roles involve software creation, Software Engineers typically focus on designing and architecting complex systems, whereas Software Developers mainly concentrate on coding and building specific applications. The roles often overlap, but the Engineer role may require broader system knowledge and design skills.

Are software engineers still in demand?

Yes, software engineers are in high demand across many industries due to ongoing digital transformation, the growth of cloud computing, and the need for software development, maintenance, and cybersecurity skills. The profession offers strong job stability, competitive salaries, and opportunities to work with various programming languages and tools.

Is 25 too late to become a software engineer?

Age is not a barrier to becoming a software engineer; many professionals start careers in tech in their mid-20s or later. Success depends on acquiring relevant skills, such as programming languages and problem-solving, often through coding bootcamps, online courses, or formal education. Employers value skills and experience over age, making it possible to enter the field at 25 or older.

Job description

Overview

Quest Software is seeking an AI Software Engineer to help define and advance AI-first software development practices for a cloud-native SaaS product on the Microsoft Azure platform. This role is intended for an experienced developer who combines strong C#/.NET, Azure, cloud architecture, and backend engineering skills with proven hands-on experience using AI coding agents, AI-assisted development platforms, and agentic development workflows in production software engineering.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute directly to the product codebase while also helping the team adopt AI coding approaches that improve development speed, code quality, test coverage, refactoring and troubleshooting. We are looking for someone who has used AI coding agents in real software development work and can translate that experience into repeatable practices.

This is a remote role.  Candidate must be located in Canada.

Responsibilities

Contribute to the adoption of AI-first software development practices across the project team.

Use AI coding agents and AI-assisted development platforms extensively in day-to-day product engineering, including solution design, implementation, automated testing, debugging, troubleshooting, refactoring, code reviews, and technical documentation.

Design reusable prompts, agent instructions, development workflows, validation steps, and guardrails that enable consistent and responsible AI-assisted software development.

Design, build, test, and maintain scalable, serverless, cloud-native SaaS capabilities using C#/.NET and Microsoft Azure technologies, including Azure Functions, Microsoft Graph API, Azure Data Explorer, Cosmos DB, AKS (Azure Kubernetes Service) and ACA (Azure Container Apps) and Event Hubs.

Contribute to architecture, technical decision-making, code reviews, CI/CD, release readiness, and ownership of critical product components in an Agile SCRUM environment.

Qualifications

Completion of a computer science undergraduate degree or equivalent practical experience.

Five or more years of professional software development experience, including strong hands-on C# and .NET experience.

Demonstrated professional experience using AI coding agents, AI-assisted development tools, or agentic development workflows as a substantial part of real software development work.

Advanced practical experience with GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Windsurf, or comparable AI-powered development platforms.

Demonstrated ability to apply AI coding tools to improve software design, implementation productivity, code quality, automated testing, debugging, troubleshooting, refactoring, code review, or technical documentation.

Experience building Azure cloud applications using event-driven, service based or microservice architectures.

Experience building scalable backend services and distributed systems.

Strong understanding of object-oriented design, design patterns, SOLID principles, secure development, automated testing, continuous integration, debugging, and maintainable software architecture.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, technical leadership, and the ability to collaborate effectively in an Agile team environment.

Nice to Have

Experience developing and maintaining YAML CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps, Jenkins, or similar systems.

Experience with Azure OpenAI Service, large language model APIs, evaluation frameworks, observability, or AI application security.

Experience with Angular or React and TypeScript.
