Job description

Job Type:StaffJob Description:The Software Engineer will be responsible for partnering with university constituents to meet database needs; conducting thorough and timely research on database applications; and ensuring optimal server side functionality for database applications and relational database management servers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Confer with systems analysts, engineers, programmers and others to design systems and to obtain information on project limitations and capabilities, performance requirements and interfaces
  • Modify existing software to correct errors
  • Analyze user needs and software requirements to determine feasibility of design within time and cost constraints
  • Consult with customers about software system design and maintenance
  • Coordinate software system installation and monitor equipment functioning to ensure specifications are met
  • Design, develop and modify software systems, using scientific analysis and mathematical models to predict and measure outcome and consequences of design
  • Develop and direct software system testing and validation procedures, programming, and documentation
  • Analyze information to determine, recommend, and plan computer specifications and layouts, and peripheral equipment modifications
  • Obtain and evaluate information on factors such as reporting formats required, costs, and security needs to determine hardware configuration
  • Determine system performance standards
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed to meet the goals and objectives of the organization and department

Leadership & Ownership Expectations

  • Ability to lead technical design discussions and make architecture decisions aligned with business goals.
  • Proven ability to own features end-to-end, from design through deployment and support.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to debug complex production issues across multiple system layers.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments and collaborating cross-functionally with business owners and teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • 7+ years of professional software development experience, with a strong focus on the .NET technology stack.
  • Advanced proficiency with C#, .NET (Core/Framework), and Visual Studio, including designing and building scalable, maintainable applications.
  • Deep experience with Microsoft SQL Server, including SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), performance tuning, indexing strategies, and writing complex SQL/stored procedures.
  • Strong experience building modern web applications using a contemporary UI framework (React preferred), with an understanding of component-based architecture and state management.
  • In-depth knowledge of HTML and CSS for creating semantic, accessible, and responsive applications
  • Proven expertise in designing and developing RESTful APIs and web services, including versioning, documentation, and scalability considerations.
  • Demonstrated experience in database architecture and data modeling, with preference for experience implementing Medallion architecture (Bronze/Silver/Gold data layers).
  • Hands-on experience integrating enterprise systems with SaaS platforms, preferably Workday, including API-based and event-driven integrations.
  • Advanced proficiency in JavaScript, including asynchronous programming patterns and modern ES6+ features.
  • Strong understanding of application security best practices, including OAuth, token-based authentication, and secure API design.
  • Experience with version control systems (GitHub preferred)

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with PostgreSQL and multi-database environments.
    • Strong familiarity with Microsoft Azure, including:
      • Azure Service Bus (messaging/event-driven architecture)
      • Microsoft Fabric (data analytics platform)
      • Azure Foundry
    • Proficiency with Object Relational Mapping (ORM) tools with preference towards Entity Framework.
    • Experience with SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) or other ETL tools such as Azure pipelines.
    • Exposure to AI/ML development, including integrating intelligent services into applications.
    • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and cloud-native application design.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Physical dexterity sufficient to use hands, arms, and shoulders repetitively to operate a keyboard and other office equipment, use a telephone, access file cabinets and other items stored at various levels, including overhead
    • Ability to speak and hear well enough to communicate clearly and understandably with sufficient volume to ensure an accurate exchange of information in normal conversational distance, over the telephone, and in a group setting
    • Ability to continuously operate a personal computer for extended periods of time (4 or more hours)
    • Mental acuity sufficient to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions
