You’ll spend part of your time guiding architectural decisions and overseeing code quality, while also focusing on coaching, mentoring, and supporting your team’s professional growth. Effective delegation, setting clear priorities, and maintaining open communication with both developers and stakeholders are key to managing these dual responsibilities. Many managers also work closely with product managers, QA, and other departments to ensure alignment across projects.

Job description

Citi is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead large-scale application development within our Funds Administration and Accounting Technology team - a group building the high-performance systems that power fund accounting operations across one of the world's largest financial institutions. In this role, you will drive complex engineering initiatives end-to-end, combining hands-on technical depth with cross-functional people leadership to deliver robust, scalable solutions at global scale. If you are a senior engineer who builds with purpose, leads with clarity, and is passionate about applying Agentic AI and modern engineering practices to real-world financial problems, this is your opportunity to make a measurable impact.
Responsibilities
  • Lead and mentor multiple teams of software engineers and analysts, setting technical direction, conducting performance reviews, and building engineering capability across the group - particularly in AI/ML and intelligent systems development.
  • Design and deliver high-performance, large-scale Java applications across the Funds Accounting domain, personally developing key software components and using your code to model best practices in Agentic AI design and implementation.
  • Define and enforce application architecture standards, ensuring all systems adhere to scalable, intelligent design patterns aligned with Citi's architectural guidelines.
  • Host structured design and code review sessions at multiple levels of the organisation to raise engineering standards and embed AI-assisted development practices, including tools such as GitHub Copilot and Devin AI.
  • Analyse complex business and system processes to architect and deliver solutions to high-priority, large-scale engineering challenges - translating end-user requirements into robust system specifications.
  • Lead the adoption of emerging technologies - with a strong focus on Agentic AI and Machine Learning frameworks - where they deliver clear business value within Citi's technology landscape.
  • Collaborate with a global team of engineers, business analysts, DevOps engineers, and support staff to plan, integrate, and ship software solutions across large budgets and cross-functional programmes.

Required Qualifications & Skills
  • 10 or more years of progressive software development experience, including deep hands-on expertise in enterprise-level Java, Spring Boot, and Spring Cloud, with strong command of the broader Spring ecosystem (Core, Integration, Batch, JDBC, Hibernate).
  • Proven ability to design and implement data architecture solutions spanning relational databases (Oracle), NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Hadoop), data warehousing, and big data technologies including Apache Spark and Kafka.
  • Practical experience building and deploying microservices architectures, RESTful APIs, and event-driven systems at enterprise scale.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms - AWS, Azure, or GCP - including cloud-native services, serverless architectures, and distributed caching frameworks such as Oracle Coherence or Redis.
  • Proficiency with containerisation and orchestration tools (Docker and Kubernetes) and CI/CD pipeline frameworks including Jenkins, SonarQube, and Git/BitBucket.
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical teams in an Agile software development environment, with clear ownership of architecture design, code quality, and delivery outcomes.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for diverse audiences, including senior leadership and non-technical stakeholders.

Beneficial Skills & Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience with Agentic AI frameworks and Machine Learning model integration within production engineering environments.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tooling such as GitHub Copilot or Devin AI, and a track record of embedding these practices into engineering team workflows.
  • Experience working within large-scale financial services technology environments, particularly in funds administration, fund accounting, or related domains.
  • Exposure to secure coding toolkits and security-first development practices within regulated industries.
