What is a software architect?

A software architect is responsible for engineering and determining the high-level design of software. In this career, your work is critical to the end user experience. While the specific job description will vary by employer, your duties typically include taking on new design projects and using a computer or system to ensure systematic software development. As a job, a software architect is on the IT career track. You must have in-depth technical knowledge and communicate clearly and effectively with the rest of the development team. Software architects must also have experience in stress resistance and analytical skills. Qualifications usually include years of experience in IT, project management, and system design.

How does a software architect typically collaborate with development teams during a project?

A Software Architect works closely with development teams by providing technical guidance, defining architectural standards, and ensuring that the software design aligns with business goals. They often participate in code reviews, help resolve complex technical challenges, and facilitate communication between engineers, product managers, and stakeholders. Regular meetings and documentation are key to ensuring everyone understands the architectural vision, which helps keep the project on track and maintain quality throughout the development lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Architect, you need deep expertise in software design principles, system architecture, and programming languages, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with architectural frameworks, cloud platforms, and modeling tools like UML, as well as certifications such as TOGAF, is highly valued. Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help you work effectively with cross-functional teams and guide projects to completion. These skills and qualities are essential for creating scalable, maintainable solutions that align with business goals and technical requirements.

What is the difference between Software Architect vs Software Developer?

AspectSoftware ArchitectSoftware Developer

Work EnvironmentDesigning system architecture, high-level planningWriting, testing, and maintaining code
Industry UsageUsed across tech companies, enterprise solutionsUsed in startups, tech firms, and various industries

While Software Architects focus on designing overall system structures and technical standards, Software Developers implement these designs through coding. Both roles require technical expertise, but Architects work at a higher strategic level, guiding development teams to ensure scalable and efficient software solutions.

Do software architects make a lot of money?

Software architects typically earn high salaries due to their advanced technical skills and experience in designing complex systems. Their compensation often reflects their expertise in areas like system architecture, cloud platforms, and programming languages, with salaries varying based on industry, location, and company size.

LOCATION: Lehi, UT
HYBRID: Monday-Wednesday in office
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Opiniion is a SaaS, AI first company reshaping how businesses understand and act on customer feedback. We're looking for a Staff Software Architect to own the architectural vision of our core platform and stay hands on while doing it. This is a role for someone who thinks in systems, codes when it matters, and can translate strategy into technical direction that scales.
You'll partner closely with our Staff Data Architect to drive the technical direction of our next generation platform, pairing application architecture with deep data architecture to build something cohesive from the ground up.
We're building a new platform alongside our current one, so this role requires balance: owning and evolving what's live today while architecting what's next, and making clear decisions about what carries over versus what gets rebuilt.
You'll set the technical bar for our platform, drive architectural consistency across engineering teams, and be a key voice as we scale our product and AI capabilities.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
  • You set overall technical direction and are the final decision-maker on cross-cutting or cross-discipline architecture calls
  • Lead architecture and system design across backend and frontend systems for our multi-tenant SaaS platform
  • Partner with the Staff Data Architect to co-drive the architecture and rollout of our new platform
  • Own critical technology decisions, ensuring systems are scalable, secure, observable, and maintainable
  • Balance ownership of the current platform with architecting the new one, making deliberate calls on what to carry over, what to rebuild, and how the two coexist during the transition
  • Partner with engineering leadership and product management to align technical roadmap with business strategy
  • Guide and mentor engineers through architecture reviews, design docs, and hands on pairing
  • Champion best practices in distributed systems design, cloud infrastructure, and DevOps/platform engineering
  • Evaluate and recommend tools, frameworks, and technologies, including AI/LLM based application patterns
  • Drive initiatives around performance optimization, system reliability, and cost efficiency at scale
  • Help shape how AI capabilities are integrated responsibly and effectively into the product

WHAT YOU BRING:
  • 10+ years of software development experience, including 7+ years in an architect, staff, or technical leadership capacity
  • Proven track record designing and scaling multi-tenant SaaS platforms
  • Deep knowledge of software architecture patterns: microservices, event-driven architecture, domain-driven design (DDD)
  • Strong grasp of distributed systems, system design tradeoffs, and non-functional requirements (NFRs) like availability, latency, and consistency
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and container orchestration (Kubernetes, Docker)
  • Hands on experience with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and DevOps/platform engineering principles
  • Familiarity with API design across REST, GraphQL, and gRPC
  • Exposure to AI/ML application architecture: LLM integration, RAG patterns, or agentic application design is a strong plus
  • Working knowledge of security and compliance frameworks (SOC 2, zero trust principles, threat modeling)
  • Comfort producing architecture decision records (ADRs) and using models like C4 to communicate design
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional leadership skills
  • Comfort co-owning technical direction alongside a peer architect, without needing a single-owner model
  • A strong bias for action and a mindset of continuous improvement

NICE TO HAVE:
  • Certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect or Azure Solutions Architect Expert
  • Experience architecting AI-first products or platforms with embedded intelligence
  • Experience with multi-country compliance requirements (data residency, privacy regulations, cross-border data handling)
  • Background in high-growth SaaS environments or post-acquisition system integration

Join Opiniion's dynamic development team and contribute your skills to build innovative solutions. If you are a passionate Software Architect seeking a challenging and collaborative environment, we'd love to hear from you!
